Damn.

ETA - I think the best thing about Jack Cristil was how he could call a Bulldog game and still give credit to opposing players when they made great plays against the Dogs.

ETA2 - Jack Cristil calls the ending of the 1980 MSU-Alabama game. State wins 6-3.

Bear Bryant brought undefeated Alabama into Jackson, MS to play the John Bond-led Bulldogs.

Wrap it in Maroon and White.

I can remember as a small child in 1980's sitting around with my whole family at Grandfathers house listening to games. There'd be a radio in the kitchen, living room, porch and the carport all tuned in to Jack.

When I was driving back from Starkville, the Ole Miss radio guys were making me think of Jack. Jack worked with a 2-minute egg timer on his table. Whenever he gave the score, he would flip the egg timer, and he tried to make sure that the egg timer never went empty. On Saturday we went through 2 full time outs in the Ole Miss game before they finally gave the score. That was probably 10 to 12 minutes of elapsed time with no score. They said things that indicated that Ole Miss was doing well, but there was no hint of the score.

That's why I frustrated with Jim. He sat at Cristil's side for 20 years. He knows how it's done. If something exciting happens Jim butchers everything that comes out of his mouth because his mouth can't keep up with his brain. He's even worse calling baseball games. He can go 15-20 minutes without giving the score.
