I think we are missing an important thing about the defense from Saturday

Not only did we not wear down against the hunh air raid, we got better as the game went on.

I am coming around to the idea of a bend but don't break defense against HUNH teams. For the most part, they couldn't do anything in the red zone which I think was the plan all along. Don't give up big plays and let the blitz packages in the red zone take care of the rest.

I'll save judgment against the wearing down part. Our offense had possession of the ball a lot allowing them to rest.

Good catch. I noticed this as well and the guys did seem to settle down and play better.

Mainly because we don't have as talented of guys. We had some absolute studs on those teams. They always seemed to be in the right place and the right time.

I completely disagree with this. We saw a lot of inexperience showing itself on Saturday that may not have shown itself had DePriest been there making the calls. We may not see it so much this year because the majority of the talent especially in the secondary is young, but I think next year, they will flourish.

Don't forget we were missing possibly our best player on defense as well.

Getting DePriest and Eddie Jackson back will be huge for us. I hate we lost Jarrick Williams, but I think Geno Smith and Nick Perry are about as good and in Geno's case better than Williams. It is a little concerning when we are playing dime as the DBs we will have out there are likely going to be Eddie Jackson, Cyrus Jones, Bradley Sylve, Landon Collins, Nick Perry, and Geno Smith. I would probably rather Geno covering a slot guy over Sylve and having Jarrick over the top, but I think CB3 is a spot Sylve could see some success as he will mostly be matched up against slightly weaker WRs.

Since Jackson is healthy, will he be starting in place of Sylve?

Does having Jackson back possibly mean he could make the secondary much better?

More than likely yes to both questions. Saban said Jackson was medically cleared to play, and that they were thinking about giving him reps this week. To me, that means that he will be eased into playing full time this upcoming week and likely take over the job full time next week. With two full weeks of practice, he should be in the swing of things by the time Florida comes around.

A 2011 defense is unlikely to ever happen again, aside from the talent level. Big plays are going to happen more often with nearly every team on our schedule using some form of spread or HUNH.

We'll need a corner like Jackson once we face A&M. I suppose he's the guy we want covering either Seals-Jones or speedy Noil

Wouldn't the idea of running a zone in the secondary be to eliminate big plays? The DBs would keep everything in front of them and allow for the short passes to be completed, but once we get into the red zone, we would clamp down and force them to settle for a field goal. This would of course mean we give up a lot of yards but don't give up a whole lot of points.

Biggest difference between the 2012-2014 defenses from the 2011 defense is that the 2011 group had 2 elite corners. With only one in 2012, the pass defense regressed. With none in 2013, pass defense regressed even more. The 2011 Bama LBs were also excellent in pass defense as well as the absolute best run defending LB group we've had at Bama during the Saban era.

I'm not saying we won't have another smothering defense. But ever seeing a team hold opponents to an average of 187 YPG is unlikely.

But you are correct, having elite DB play again is necessary. And I think Brown and Humphrey will get us there when they get experience.

While I think that is true, that doesn't excuse poor tackling, confusion before the snap, or not making a play on the ball.

The troubling thing is that we see all of that and in the end, we have seen zero improvement against these type of offenses. If that is going to be the case, then our offense needs to pick up the slack.

Our defense gave up one TD and for the most part they struggled in the red zone. I can see the improvement. Getting Trey DePriest back should solve a lot of the issues concerning confusion. The poor tackling needs to be addressed though.

While true, I think WVU kind of slopped around when they were staring TD's right in the face (high snap, poor play calling, etc.)

We tightened down a bit in the 2nd half but against better teams with more capable players, we don't have the luxury of waiting for the second half.

We are in desperate need of a good defensive showing against a spread offense because it seems like we've lost confidence & swagger on that side of the ball.
