Is anyone starting to get a little concerned that we haven't narrowed it down a bit? Grady is back with the WRs, so I think it is down to Patton, Johnny, and Stephen. McCrary had a great post-practice interview. I love his attitude. Patton may have misspoke a bit to start his interview, and I think he believes he is the one who will be winning the battle. Stephen has clearly perfected the art of a neutral interview that gives nothing away.

I love seeing the upside from Johnny, but Patton has always seemed incredibly calm. Rivers is the unknown since I have not been able to see him practice or anything. Obviously, Mason, Dorrell, and the staff will know best, but I'd love to see McCrary be able to take over. If he can beat out Patton, I would feel even better about this year because Robinette is no slouch. Johnny's athleticism just adds a dynamic that we have not had very often.

Didn't Mason say that McCrary was starting to assert himself? I think he'll be our starter through SEC play. I was glad to say Grady moved over to WR too. He's been such a great asset to the program, and he just wasn't going to see the field as a QB

Why would you say that? Have you seen something from him that I haven't? What I know amounts to very little since I didn't follow him at LSU.

I think he did, but he also has stated that Robinette is looking really confident and comfortable. I'm not sure if he's just talking up Patton or what. Grady is definitely the man. He is has been awesome through everything. I would love to see him have a great year at WR.

Played sports against him growing up and he had a live arm. Just like to see him get a shot

Fair enough. Thought you were in on some anti-Vandy sabotage. You other SEC fans are gonna start hating us when you realize the easy wins are gone. Oh wait, Auburn has never had that with Vandy.

I'd really like to see Rivers step up. With our O line and backs, I think a 6'7" pocket passer might be just the thing we need...

Not likely. Not TheRig's style, from my observation...

Oh, I know it's not. I guess you guys forget I'm the one "outsider" allowed on the Auburn board. Definitely one of the best on the site.

I get your point about having a big, steady presence in the pocket, but the idea of McCrary running the option with the backs that we have makes me salivate. The cannon Johnny's got also gives us a chance to go deep that I'm not sure either of the other two can match. He made some throws in the B&G Game that he just seemed to lazily toss out there and they were 60 yards downfield. The question marks are if he is going to be mentally ready to make the reads and decisions and if his accuracy is on-point enough to let the strength be utilized.

Sidewalk fan here. I read in the Tennessean that they are still splitting snaps equally. Think with Rivers you get maturity. Not sure what being at LSU for 4 years gets you in terms of actual experience other than a shitload of practice time. Has to think he has gotten at least a little better over those years. He was also offered scholarships at places like Stanford, Fla State, UCLA, etc. how much of that is the last name though.....

Robinette wasn't too terrible last year, seemed to get better as the season went on. Wasn't as highly recruited as the other two. At least he's got a year under his belt.

McCrary was highly recruited as well - offers came in from Fla State and Georgia.

Probably going to go down to the wire. Question is, is it better to have the guy that didn't suck as a backup last year who has legs, the really young guy who can run in case the OL doesn't do well, or the guy that can't run as well but is a giant and can see the field?

Thanks gentlemen and you're absolutely right that Vandy is our kryptonite. I'm 0-2 attending games at Vandy

But on topic, I believe having a tall QB with an arm is an unusual advantage you don't see often in this league.

Looks like Mason is going to name the starter tomorrow night.

Something tells me all 3 will start a game this season though

And the winner is Patton Robinette. Still stand by my all 3 start a game this season prediction.

I don't disagree with your assessment at all. I'm interpreting this as "Patton will start against Temple". Wouldn't surprise me at all to see multiple QBs used in that game...

Mason said it was very very close in the Tennessean today. I figure Robinette probably deserves it anyways for the wins he pulled out last year.

Actually the bigger question is probably who is he going to pass it to, Lots of green receivers.

I expect Patton will play the first half. If we're up big (and should be) then Johnny will get some time followed by Rivers maybe. I think Rivers really is outside looking in on the top 2.

I'm really excited to see Jordan Cunningham's development over last year. But you're right, our WR corps is really inexperienced.

Eta: rivers is 2 on the depth chart. It seems Mcrary is having trouble learning the WCO

Fire up the machine again! If you thought McCrary vs Freebeck was going to be fun, strap in. Patton is medically cleared, but he won't start (likely due to lack of practice). So now we have all sorts of potential controversy. If McCrary plays good or great and team responds, does he pass Patton (especially with a win vs Missouri)? If Johnny plays poorly, how short is his leash? If we pull McCrary, do we go to Wade or Patton? What factors (score, Patton's leadership, etc) play into that? Oh boy...here we go.

I doubt that Patton has practiced at all, so I would imagine that he is #3, but who knows when or where the big random wheel of QBs will land on any given Saturday...
