Was Tennessee's 1998 team the most unexpected champion in modern history?

Honestly, look back and think about how many people undervalued this squad after losing Peyton Manning, arguably one of the best QB's of all time.
Not many people thought of Tee Martin as a championship caliber QB entering the season. Tee beats Florida and they manage to get lucky (thanks Clint Stoerner) and finish 13-0. Most improbable run of all time? Or does Auburn's title with Cam Newton parallel this?

Cam Newton was unstoppable. Doesn't even compare. Except for that first half of that Bama game.
I mean yes, it was unexpected, but there was SOME hype behind Cam.

That was the luckiest team I have ever seen.
For a season.
For a season.

I think y'all were a top 10 team to start the season
Auburn in 2010 was 22
LSu in 2003 was 14
you have to assume it isn't too crazy for a preseason top ten team to win a championship.

Last year's Auburn team would have been this hands down.

No, 28 players from 1998 Tennessee team were drafted. Fulmer was cheating his arse off at the time and he out-recruited everybody, including Florida. 90's~early 2000's Tennessee teams were absolutely loaded.

Tennessee almost lost to Syracuse the first game of the year. They won by one point.

A Donovan McNabb lead Syracuse who was something like a top 15 team.

Syracuse has over 700 wins all time and they were actually good in the 90's. They went to a BCS bowl in 1998 (Orange Bowl)
1998 Tennessee beat eight bowl teams, including six January bowl teams, four top ten teams, and three BCS bowl-bound teams.

Plus McNabb was throwing to Marvin Harrison and Dwight Freeny was on defense.

From what I remember, a lot of people thought Tennessee would be good, but no one was picking them to win the East, much less a national title.

Had Colins Cooper not went full retard, UF probably wins that game in Knoxville.
Oh and UF blasted Syracuse in the Orange Bowl that year too.

The Stoernover was luckier than anything auburn had in 2013.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Lewis lost early in the season on an ACL tear? Or am I a year late on that? If so, coming back from losing Peyton and Lewis is no small feat. Plus, wasn't Martin actually, legitimately getting paid? As in, it was proven, but nothing was done about it, right? No flame, but I seem to remember that.
Anyway, yeah, UTK was pretty unexpected that year. 2010 Auburn is awfully close, though. Cammy Cam had some very, very close calls that season, including the Clemson, USC, Arky and Bama games.

Every team that wins a lot of games has to have luck in at least one game.

Travis Henry imposed his will on your defense that drive. I don't think anyone could have stopped him

Jamal Lewis was out early in the 1998 season. but RB depth chart was still stacked and UT really didn't miss him. Lewis was a beast in 1997 though.
