When was Johnny named the starter in 2012? Seems like it was the same time frame, about two weeks before the first game, but I don't remember.

Pretty standard practice really. Both Candidates gets reps with the first team on generalized plays of the offense. After the starter is named then majority of the reps goes to the starter and the Coaches implement the bulk of the playbook/scheme for the upcoming game.
