Alabama Football (2000-2003): 24-25 .489
Alabama Football (2010-2013): 46-7 .867

Who could have ever imagined 10 years ago we'd be where we are right now?

At this time in 2000, I would have bet the farm Alabama would be more like the latter than the former. I never woul have guessed those years between 2000-2006 would happen. Ugh.

The same. Most Alabama fans my 13-year-old self talked to during that time felt very strongly that we were a 12-1/13-0 team coming into 2000.

No one in their wildest dreams expected the horrors that awaited us between then and Nick Saban's arrival in Tuscaloosa.

Most Bama fans knew it was only a matter of time before we'd be back.

We were one more bad decision/controversy/probation away from being a homecoming game for Pittsburgh or Notre Dame.

There was never any doubt from anyone I knew that Bama's return was right around the corner. I don't know if most thought it'd be by 08, but around 2012-15 was a good target range. Of course no one predicted a dynasty, but most I knew expected Bama to be back and win at least one title.

no one had a timetable on anything ... no one knew when "it" would happen ... there was never any doubt bama would be back as a contender every year ... we were never 1 bad decision away from being someone's hc gimmee ...

this is alabama ... we want a great football program, and we'll hire/fire/hire whoever we need in order for a great program to take place ...

I'm certain they were only estimating.

I think every major program has cycles. Programs like Nebraska, Texas and Tennessee won't be down forever.

I was posting on the old ESPN boards soon after the NCAA penalties were handed down. I remember a lot of AU posters that I was familiar with at that time saying that Bama Football would be irrelevant for at least 50 years. I can't say that I could disagree with that outlook. It just makes the job Saban has done even more impressive to me.

I'll agree with Texas and Nebraska, but I will disagree on Tennessee. Tennessee doesn't have one necessary component that Texas, and to some degree, Nebraska have--loyal, regional talent that still comes through the pipeline when the team isn't "hot."

We generally have it, and it is what got us through to a great 2008 season. Was the 2008 recruiting class an all-time group? Absolutely. But we forget that guys like Arenas, McClain, McElroy, Mike Johnson, Caldwell,Mike McCoy, Andre Smith, Marquis Johnson, Justin Woodall, JPW, Glenn Coffee, Leigh Tiffin, Eryk Anders, Brandon Deaderick, and Bobby Greenwood are all guys that came through our pipline in low times, and played on 12-0 teams.

Tennessee just doesn't have that talent coming through in lean years, to where they would automatically be in contention with a strong class like we had in 2008.

Best example would be Ole Miss. Take that 2007 Alabama team stacked with "middling recruiting" times and give them the class Ole Miss had Nkemdiche, Tunsel, and Treadwell, and you are still looking at a 10 win team for the Tide. The reason Ole Miss didn't have it was because they don't have that "baseline" talent.

Tennessee doesn't either.

Tennessee has no in-state talent compared to other SEC schools. In the 90's and early 2000's, they made a living out of cherry picking the Carolinas, North AL, GA, and then going out West. Since UA, UGA, and others have fenced off their states, the well has dried up for UT. The best receruiting base in the state is Memphis and it is closer to 4-5 other SEC schools than it is UT.

UT will never be a perrenial bottom dweller because they have too much money and care too much. However, their days of being the second best program in the SEC are over.
