It looks like my plans to go to the University of Central Florida are not going to work so I may have to head to State since I will have some friends there, and it's close to home. What can you guys tell me about the party scene and nightlife that is there? Is there any kind of I guess you would say raving parties or club music kind of parties/bars/whatever there? I'm not into anything country or bluegrass at all. Just basically any tips on what can I expect from the partying atmosphere would be appreciated. Any aerospace engineering info would also be appreciated as well

How old are you and what are your interests?

I'll be 20 when I eventually end up at State. Interests for party like stuff would be something like would happen at a rave or club-like parties. Just basically I'm a nightlife and city kind of person.

The nightlife in Starkville is not good honestly. If your looking for a club type of nightlife then you're SOL.

You are a nightlife and city person? Why are you going to oxford and Starkville?

I don't feel like getting myself in debt and paying the out of state tuition somewhere else. I still haven't ruled out going to UCF or Georgia Tech. Plus I wouldn't have a problem in Oxford since I love Ole Miss

Go to Georgia tech if you can get in.

I would love to, but at State I would have a place to stay, some of my bestfriends there, close to home, save lots of money, and still be able to go to Ole Miss games so going to State still has a lot of pros.

You're not really gonna find a "clubby" atmosphere in Starkville. Rick's would be your best bet, but the scene there flip-flops a lot between club/country/concert depending on what's going on that night.
As far as I know, our AE program is pretty good. Obviously it would fall short when comparing to GT, but if you just wanna get a bachelor's degree and a job you'd be set at either. A friend of mine got her bachelor's and master's in AE at State and now she lives in Denver and helps design the new space shuttle replacement.

You'll find out quick that AE and partying don't mix all that well, especially if you partake in all the clubs and stuff on the side to help dot your resume for future employment. Not unless you have a lot of self-control and are very good at time management.
I co-oped thru ME and struggled the first couple of semesters(partially from partying, partially from a shitty private school education, partially due to shitty and undeveloped study habits but I digress). Once I went to work for 9 months away from literally everyone and everything I knew, I came back a lot different. Still partied my share -- but I treated school like a job. Basically did "school" from 7-5 every day with about an hour off for lunch. Keeping this schedule kept me ahead in stuff, and I almost never had to cram or study much at night. But obviously hard to party very hard on that schedule.

Yea I agree that you have to be careful with the partying, but I would only do that kind of stuff on weekends or spring break. Since I've already been working and will continue for the next year I probably won't have a job while I'm at State so I should have plenty of study time. The thing about going to State would be some of my good friends are there that aren't into partying so they would keep me under control some. If I went off on my own I might go wild and flunk out.

Aerospace Engineering majors don't worry about the party scene.
You will quickly learn that Starkville is not the bad, and the starkness has been greatly over exaggerated over the years.
But seriously, you're going to be hanging with nerdy chinese kids.

Is this because of the difficulty or the people who usually major in AE?

Probably both.

I would strongly advise against going into AE. There is no job market in it. I have a friend that was an AE major with a 3.5 gap and interned with nasa. He has been out of college for 3 years and still hasn't found a job.

Still hasn't found a job in the South or in the whole United States? I have no problem moving far off to find a job. In fact I prefer that.

I had a guy in my fraternity get a 4.0 in AE and graduated three years ago and is already pulling down 6 figures. He spent all day studying, but all weekend drunk, so it can be done, it is just tough. It is a really, really good program (one of the most cost efficient programs you will find).
For the rave atmosphere, Rick's is your best bet if they have the right band or DJ. Your other bet is that State Theater recently reopened, and if it is anything like it used to be, it might have the kind of atmosphere that you are looking for. I can't personally verify that, however, as I have not been since it reopened. If you don't mind your environment to be a little bit trashy, The Hunt Club and Cowbell's are pretty okay, but I am not a fan
Starkville's bar scene, specifically the Cotton District, Dave's, and Halfway House are pretty great if you like relaxed bars with good drink selection, but they are really a partying place so much as a good place to socialize and pick up girls.
