I know my grandma swore by it. I never could tell plus looks sort of weird. What say you?

Snopes page

TLDR: It's unclear if it works.

I think Mythbusters did an episode on this. I believe, "No".

That's one I've never heard. I've been thinking about getting some planters and planting some mint and lavender around my back porch. Supposedly the strong smell wards off mosquitos.

As mentioned above, myth busters did this and proved it was absolutely false.

Tried it. Bugs landed on the bag of water...so I'd say no

It was proven absolutely false for the conditions that mythbusters tested it under. As the snopes article mentions, there are a variety of factors that might influence a different outcome.

Only if the bag of water is dropped on the insect or if the insect is inside the bag with the water.

It doesn't. Citronella plants will, but I've grown mint for years, and Mosquitos don't seem to care

This. Just go to your local garden center and ask for a mosquito plant.

Also, if you run out of bug spray you can rub a dryer sheet on your exposed skin. It works.

The only thing that really works well (that i have found) are the insect bombs that you put outside and then go inside for thirty minutes before you come back outside.
