Auburn - Bama freshmen football games?

I read something in one of my older Auburn books about football games that used to happen between freshmen at the 2 schools. Anyone have an info on this? The blurb I read was about Sullivan and Beasley playing against Bama while the varsity team was practicing.
When did it stop and why?

I imagine they don't want players to be injured in a scrimmage match. More freshmen play these days.

Probably when more and more freshman started playing Varsity.
Also freshman and JV teams were too expensive to run seeing as they really didn't bring in revenue.

Did Georgia or LSU do this with any teams?

Prior to 1972, freshmen were not eligible to play varsity sports. They had 3 years of eligibility after completing their freshman year. But, they could compete against other freshman teams, and played (in most cases) a limited schedule.
Of course, at that time, there were no scholarship limits, so the big schools might bring in 50 or 60 freshman (enough to field a team), only to cut many of them following their freshman year.
Once they imposed scholarship limits, that was no longer possible, so they made freshmen eligible (and instituted redshirt rules).

Alabama still had a freshman/junior varsity team until 2002.

That was only in case the varsity team got put on probation.

Until sometime in the 70's, freshmen were not eligible to play in varsity games.
When I was at AU in the early 80's, there was still a "JV" team that played a couple of games a year.
I'm not sure when JV was totally shut down.

Other similar teams. It's kind of like the other 40-50 players we and everyone has on the teams currently above the 85. Except they scrimmaged/played other schools.

Back in the days when more kids were on scholarship and freshmen were eligible, but redshirts were not allowed.
They were players who didn't play a major role at the time.
Can't do it now because it cost a season of eligibility (if you play, can't redshirt), and teams don't have 100+ on scholarship.

LINK
Tennessee played JV games as recently as 2008. They played Hargrave a couple years in a row in Neyland.
Apparently if you play JV games you can't play redshirts and anyone who plays has to sit out at least one varsity game.

It used to be that freshmen were not eligible to play varsity ball. As a result, there was a JV team. Tech and Georgia used to play an annual thankgiving game for charity between the two junior teams. When i was a little boy, we used to go to this game in Atlanta every year.
Dont recall the year, but they did away with this and made freshmen eligible for varsity ball in the late 70's I think.
Shortly thereafter this kid from georgia named hershel showed up.
