Saw this today in the Marietta daily journal and thought UGA fans would appreciate it.

quote:

Sunday morning, Hutson Mason woke up to a text message from Zach Mettenberger, who was briefly Mason’s teammate at Georgia.

That’s not out of the ordinary. Mason keeps in touch and has had many conversations with Mettenberger over the last few seasons, even as Mettenberger went on to play at LSU and, most recently, was drafted by the Tennessee Titans.

But that wasn’t all.

Mason’s former coach at Lassiter High School, Chip Lindsey, had also called.

At that point, Mason knew and felt that something was wrong.

quote:

Mason was one of the last people who had an opportunity to talk to Lutzenkirchen — less than 48 hours before he died.

“It’s a conversation I’ll cherish,” said Mason, Georgia’s expected starting quarterback for the 2014 season. “It seemed like it was God-ordained. He reached out to me and said he was praying for me. He wanted me to have a big year this season after all the things I went through (waiting four years for the chance to start.

There is no doubt Mason will be looking to make Lutz proud this upcoming season.

Good article

How much older was Lutz? Or are they the same age?

Amazing how beyond all the nitpicking and nagging one another, the DSOR still comes down to brother looking after brother. Lutz deserves to be remembered as a colorbearer of this fraternity that binds our venerable rivalry together.

Lutz is a year older. They started together on football for one year and basketball for two or three. Hutson was really fricking good at basketball.

And this is why Athens is my favorite SEC town other than Auburn. The DSOR is exactly what a college football rivalry should be

I couldn't imagine what Philip's family is going through, but Hutson has to be really depressed. I couldn't imagine losing one of my best friends while so young.

I had never known how close Hutson and Lutz were. Until the accident I didn't even realize it was Hutson throwing that pass in the back of the endzone to Philip.

I really hope that Mason can transform his grief into a great season. I have been hoping for great things for Hutson since he is a Lassiter guy, but he wll be my #1 non-AU player I will be pulling for this year.

I really find it interesting how much contact all the players have from all other teams. It shows how hatred in in rivalries normally only runs "fan deep".

Very interesting as well that Mett has always been in contact with Mason.

Most of the "hate" & "rivalries" are way overblown for the players. In a lotta cases (especially in the south) they've grown up playing with & against each other for years...

As much as rival fans won't admit it, there is not a "huge" amount of hate between the players from "rival" schools...

There is more of a respect & a bond between the players between each other which transcends the "fans" & alumni rivalries...

AU vs UA, UF vs UGA, AU vs UGA, OM vs MSU etc seem to be a hella lot more life & death to the fans than to the players...
