Well SC and Mizzou got an arbitary and very generic looking trophy for both being in Columbia. Looks like SC and A&M might get one now I guess?

quote:

James Butler Bonham, the University of South Carolina-educated hero of the Alamo, will adorn a trophy that could be exchanged by the Gamecocks and Texas A&M starting this fall, according to a former S.C. Republican party leader working with governors in both states.

Bonham is considered the romantic hero of the 1836 Texas battle for leaving the Alamo to get help and returning through enemy lines despite knowing the large force of Mexican soldiers would attack soon. He insisted on telling fort commander William Travis, a fellow Saluda County native, who had asked Bonham to join Texas’ fight for independence, that the fort would not receive assistance, historians say.

The bronze sculpture, depicting Bonham on a horse headed back to the Alamo, is slated to be traded between USC and Texas A&M when they start their annual Southeastern Conference football games on Aug. 28 at Williams-Brice Stadium, said Katon Dawson, a former S.C. Republican party boss who chaired Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s 2012 presidential run in South Carolina.

Yeah we're pretty evenly matched. Exactly .500. Even better than the AU-UGA rivalry.

it'd be cool if our latest rival had a chance to actually win this trophy unlike the Battle of Columbia

it gets boring knowing we're going to win that one all the time

I think it's great. Our Alamo fighters didn't just come from Texas; they gave up their lives in places like South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, New York, etc.

It means much to recognize any of those heroes--in any way.

As for the rivalry talk ...right now it's just a trophy--kinda like a bowl trophy. It doesn't have to mean "rivalry," by default. With that said, I do think a great rivalry will emerge between our two programs. I'm excited about it.

It's got potential.

My group and I had approached both ADs with the idea about Travis a few months ago but it was shot down for reasons stated .... I actually made a post here on the SECr about it at the time while citing The Travis Letter.

I think this Bonham connection is a good one. Both ADs and the powers that be seem to be behind it and they've already got the bronze statuette of Bonham riding so they'll be able to convert it to a trophy fairly easily I was told.

The big question being posed to the SEC is if this game will stick in the future and not be eliminated in short order with another schedule shuffle.

Some years ago two factions from UT and SC presented an idea for a rivalry trophy significant to the Orange & Black colors dominant during our annual game traditionally played on Halloween weekend each year. The working name of the trophy was The Pumpkin Cup but they were going to change it to something else.

Both sides seemed game but then Kiffin I think, said or did something that pissed off our side .... all black uniforms for UT followed and the idea was dropped.

This one with A&M could be good though. Our state histories and overall rebellious mindsets have some similarities.

I agree. Rivalry to 1897 don't need no stinking trophy. LSU studend government came up with it and our stupid ASB AGREED ON IT. Not needed.

William Barratt Travis was from Alabama...

In my opinion the sec rivalries that make the most sense for ATM are the following...
1. LSU- border rival. A lot of LSU / ATM fans in east Texas.
2. Arky - swc/annual game in cowboys stadium.
3. Alabama - bear bryant/gene stallings/fran(lol)/pretty good games recently.
4. Olemiss - a lot Texas HS rejects go to ole miss.
5. Auburn/miss state- all Ag schools. While auburn is a much prettier campus, the three campuses share a lot of similarities.
6. Mizzou - big 12. Mizzou gets a lot of Texas HS players
7. South Carolina - they have a made up trophy .

I'm not disagreeing that aTm - USCe can be a great rivalry. This trophy thing right off the bat makes it look forced just like the Boot and that dumb arse Magnolia trophy.
