Value Bourbons ....

I'm calling it that because it sounds better than 'cheap' Bourbons.
I've decided to slum a little bit and see if the cheaper stuff is drinkable neat. I've tried Virginia Gentlemen and - no thanks. The plastic container should have tipped me off. Heinous bourbon.
So who here is familiar with value bourbon and what would you recommend?
And by value I mean Evan Williams, Jim Beam White Label, Four Roses Yellow Label, Old Crow, Old Granddad, Fighting Cock, etc.
I'm already a big fan of Wild Turkey 101, so that's already made my list.
Any assistance is appreciated.

All of the ones I mentioned are cheaper than Maker's.
Maker's, for what you get, isn't exactly a 'value bourbon', imo.

I like Wild Turkey 101, but it doesn't like me. I'm guessing it's the high alcohol content but whatever, it tears my gut up. Not a fan of Evan Williams or Jim Beam. Four Roses is OK. Knob Creek is my go-to, but I'm not sure if it meets your price criteria. Good stuff. If I'm rewarding myself I go with Blanton's, which is about twice as expensive as Knob Creek.

Yeah, I have a lot of the high end stuff and love all of it. Knob Creek (120 proof), Blanton's, Four Roses (small batch and single barrel), Eagle Rare, Angels Envy, Evan Williams (single barrel), etc.
I'm wanting to try the value stuff to make sure I'm not over-paying, and to maybe find a diamond in the rough that I would otherwise overlook.

The two best value Bourbons, by far, are Fighting Cock and Kessler's.

I may not. But of the bourbon I've tried, price isn't always an indicator of what I like. So I thought I'd try some of the cheaper stuff to see if I could find bourbons that are outstanding, but not expensive. Such as (for me) Wild Turkey 101 and Jim Beam Black Label.
That's why I'm asking for advice first - so I don't waste a lot of time with cheap bourbons that suck.
Then I'll experiment some.

If you're going cheaper than Maker's, Jim Beam Black Label is pretty good for the price.

I actually like JB Black a lot. That's why I'm thinking of giving JB White a try.
I also like JB Devil's Cut, which reminds me of JB Black but with more of an oak taste to it.

It's good stuff. Made at the same distillery as Evan Williams. I've toured the place, wearing one of their hats right now as a matter of fact.
They just came out with another bourbon called Larceny. I had some when I was up there and it too is excellent.
FWIW I hold a golf tourney down here every year for old Army buddies that cone from all over the country. All I serve is Fighting Cock, so the tourney took on the name. The guys can't get Fighting Cock in some of the states where they live so they always stock-up and take a few bottles back with them.
Try Kessler's and Larceny too ... they are both excellent for the money, but Fighting Cock you can't go wrong with and you get a lot more bourbon for your hard earned dollar.

Buffalo Trace is some fine stuff. Around $22 a fifth.

evan williams is my go to bourbon for 30+ years. I drink it if I am mixing it with anything.
if I am drinking on the rocks or shots, then I prefer something better like a small batch bourbon like Knob Creek or Blantons.
I personally dont like Makers mark. Just my personal taste.

Just go with a nice speyside single malt.
If you must drink Bourbon though, Elijah Craig 12 year is pretty good mid-shelf bourbon.

No. I have nothing against Scotch. I have kept an open mind and I have tried a number of high quality single malts.
But I enjoy Bourbon MUCH better than Scotch. That's just the way it is for me. Scotch has too much raisins, figs, stewed fruits and other tastes I don't care for all that much. Plus many of them allow coloring. I think Bourbon tastes better and, frankly, is more honest.
And I do enjoy Elijah Craig 12 yr. very much.
