Why? Because every other show or movie has been done dammit.
Alabama - Sterling: been running the show for years/goes off and does questionable shite every now and then/but when he's on his game he can't be beat. Has influence over everyone in the firm.
Florida- don draper: has a questionable past with very little success. Recently in his life he has been blessed with a lot of success, but still has pitfalls. Innovative creative method to his success.
Pete Campbell- auburn: thinks he is smarter than everyone when in reality he is just an arse that dresses well. His success is tied to the real power brokers of the firm.
I'll finish this later. Feel free to suggest others.

I don't disagree with the Pete Campbell selection.
But you must not watch Mad Men too much if you think Pete is just an arse that dresses well.
They sure as hell needed him to pull their asses out of the fire the first time McCann tried a hostile takeover.
And he's gonna be one rich sonofagun starting next season (it seems).

He is an arse, but to say thy is all his character is, is not giving him credit. He is also one of the main reasons the firm is still in business. He ran the Cali office. His success is not tied to the other partners. He is one of the few that really didn't ride coat tails.
