As you can see in this article UGA was voted best at working hard and playing hard. As an incoming freshman I have a few questions.
Required listening
How hard is Journalism as a major?
How hard is it to get into Grady?
What was your study to party ratio?
TIA

Based on the people I knew in J school, it is easy.
Don't try to study late at night.
Make friends with your profs, you will get better grades.
Mouths can't get pregnant.
There, I just got you through undergrad....

It's not how hard it is, it's whether you enjoy it or not. Look at it in that sense and you'll be a lot better off.

From what my friends told me, not too hard. Just don't mess around your first two years.

I generally only went out Thurs, Fri, Sat. Rarely would I go out during the early part of the week. But as a freshman you'll probably go out a bit more as your friends are going to want to.

I made the Dean's List every spring semester and had below a 3.0 every fall semester. I would suggest that you resist temptation and study more than you want to/think you need to in the fall.

At Tech, used to wake up w/ a hangover and then run to class without a pencil or a calculator and then find people sitting in the hallway who had been studying all night.

I would say go out twice during the week, and both weekend days. Just study in the library after class on days you plan on going out so you can make up for the study time you would have spent that night. Obviously don't go out on the day before the test

Dropping the internet schtick for a moment here....
That's the wrong question to ask. What about journalism makes you want to consider one of their offerings as a major? What do you want to do with your future - which is a pretty tough question for most freshmen.
I went out every night of the week sometimes. And other times, only on the weekends. A couple of pieces of advice on the academic side:
1. Get into the Honors Program if you aren't already. It's an amazing program and offers tons of opportunities to set yourself apart from the general student population and prepare yourself for grad school/internships and such and such.
2. Involve yourself in campus/school/major activities - whether it's the Greek scene, student government, whatever. It looks great on your academic resume and it's a really good way to meet like minded people, as well as diversify your friend base.
3. STEM and business careers offer excellent payback on your investment from a college like UGA - especially if you keep HOPE all the way through. If you could keep HOPE, graduate with a business/STEM degree, go through the Honors Program, and have a couple of internships and activities under your belt, you're ahead of 95% of your peers and you'd have very little student loan debt. That would be a very good position to be in.
4. Internships/study abroad - do it. Spend a summer somewhere overseas, and your final two interning. And learn a language.
College is about preparing you for a career, expanding your educational and cultural experiences, and socializing with a ton of other people away from home for the first time. Don't forget any part of that.

If you are naturally good at writing and communicating, grady is a breeze. Its really not even work. If you go pub management, there are some more demanding math, accounting, biz classes involved.

Go out Thursdays and Saturdays. Sometimes on Tuesdays and Fridays.

I think you may be over-analyzing this....... Are you planning on setting timers every time you start to study or "party" or something? So, that you can cross-reference the results with a ratio?
Just use common sense. If you have it, you"ll do fine. If you don't, you'll be one of the ones who washes out.
Also, for your foreign language, take Mandarin Chinese. A Journalism degree, as with most degrees, will be entirely worthless, but speaking some Chinese in the coming future will be a valuable skill..

I have a Journalism degree from Grady and let me tell you something: pick a different major, especially if you dream of being a sports writer. 10 years ago you could still do something with the degree, but the profession is changing so dramatically because of technology that the good jobs just aren't there anymore. I moved over to corporate communications and make a decent living, but it's not what I dreamed of doing.

The only other major that really caught my attention was Sports Management and I am not trying to be a PE teacher or high school athletic director. Plus if my Journalism degree fails me I can always go to graduate school and try to follow in my Dad's footsteps in Law School.

I decided to take Portuguese for shits and giggles. Also that language opens the doors to marrying a Brazilian woman

Sports management has nothing to do with either of these jobs. A PE teacher would need a PE education degree (sports management does not get you certified to teach). A HS AD would need a masters in educational leadership.
Depending on what you want to do in the sports world a sports management degree can be very useful.

How hard is it to get into Grady?
quote:Kind of depended on the year. Usually went out 2 of the 3 nights between Thurs-Sat. Drank a little at trivia on Wednesdays and then would sometimes go out on Tuesday if it was a really slow week. Just make sure you study first
What was your study to party ratio?

Grady is pretty easy to get into unless you're a PR major.
Journalism is a very simple degree. The classes are in general, easy as can be.It was much easier than my other major But there are aspects of the degree that I didn't like and I probably would't do it again.
The classes, while easy, can be time consuming if you have other majors. I remember I had an issue in a couple of classes where I had a couple of days to go out and get a story during business hours and I had class for the other major all day long the next day which left me rushing to get what I needed for quality work.
Because the classes are so easy, you're expected to be doing stuff on your own from day 1. The people I know who got jobs with good companies in journalism literally spent all day everyday doing personal stuff to add to their portfolio and their portfolio's are usually very big.
Also, if you're going to do journalism, unless you do very very well for yourself, you're going to be pretty poor.
I did get good stuff out of it that I will undoubtedly be able to put to use with what I plan to do, but it left me with very little interest in pursuing a journalism career.
Also, you have to prepare yourself. The students in Journalism are often times:
A. Super liberal
B. Not many hot girls, but the ones who are hot are pretty
C. Bunch of fatties
D. Hippies
E. Passive
If that doesn't sound like you, you might have issues with some of your classmates.
Oh, and all the professors are great. They also realize a lot of people in Grady are going into different careers and I had several say they'll use their connections to place you wherever you want to be when you graduate whether that be business, politics, law enforcement, etc.

Following up on that... Companies really dont hire journalists any more, they hire an expert who can write good, whether it is sports, tech, whatever. Most of the money is in marketing and pr. But you have to be an expert in that field first, and a journalist 2nd. More later when i can type on a real keyboard.
