The only member of the Eastern division that the Commodores didn't beat in either of the past two years is South Carolina, and we frankly had a good chance in Nashville in 2012.

With a new coaching staff and lots of new faces, I'll honestly be thrilled if we can get to 6 wins and "win" a trip to Shreveport, but there's no one on our 2014 schedule that we can't compete with.

The reason you won those games lives in Pennsylvania.

Really? Okay, if you say so.

2011 – UCONN (5-7); Ole Miss (2-10); Army (3-9); UK (5-7); Wake Forest (6-6)
2012 – Missouri (5-7); Auburn (3-9); UMASS (1-11); UK (2-10); Ole Miss (6-6); UT (5-7); Wake Forest (5-7)
2013 – UMASS (1-11); UAB (2-10); UGA (8-5); UF (4-8); UK (2-10); UT (5-7); Wake Forest (4-8)

Vanderbilt, in three years of regular season games, beat a total of one team that finished the season above .500 (UGA ’13). They beat two teams that finished the season at .500 (Wake, Ole Miss). Vandy’s wins came against teams with a combined record of 74-155.

Vandy has had a successful three year run because their coach did a good job developing and coaching some NFL talent left over from Bobby Johnson’s recruiting classes (Hayward, Matthews, Fugger, Seymour, Stacy, Johnson) but mostly because UT and UK are at or near historical low points in their history. Vandy caught Auburn, Ole Miss and Florida at historical low points in their history. Vandy also dumbed down the OOC schedule as far as possible, beating teams with a combined 27-69 record.

I seem to recall Northwestern being dropped from the schedule after beating Vandy in '11. I also remember that Vandy pulled out of the Ohio State series by letter.

Whether Vandy is competitive with everyone in the conference depends mostly on whether UT and UF rebound, whether UK improves, whether Missouri/Ole Miss sustains their higher level of success and whether Georgia lives up to their potential.

Vandy beat the following SEC opponents in that three year span:

UK 3x (combined 9-27)
Ole Miss 2x (combined 8-16)
UT 2x (combined 10-14)
Auburn 1x (3-9)
Missouri 1x (5-7)
UF 1x (4-8)
UGA 1x (8-5)

Other than the UGA game in '13, how did Vandy do?

'11

11-2 SCAR - Lost 21-3
12-1 BAMA - Lost 34-0
10-4 UGA - Lost 33-28
11-2 ARKY - Lost 31-28
7-6 UF - Lost 26-21
5-7 UT - Lost 27-21

'12

11-2 SCAR - Lost 17-13
12-2 UGA - Lost 48-3
11-2 UF - Lost 31-17

'13

8-5 Ole Miss - Lost 39-35
11-2 SCAR - Lost 35-25
12-2 Mizz - Lost 51-28
9-4 TAMU - Lost 56-24

Looks like the secret to Vandy's success (in addition to Franklin and having the SEC's all-time leader in receptions) was playing a bunch of bad SEC East teams.

I'm not sure there's enough to say "there's no one on our 2014 schedule that [you] can't compete with."
