Georgia fans, is this how the Nick Marshall recruitment really played out?

Marshall, now a junior at Auburn, was a two-sport star at Wilcox County. In fact, for awhile he wanted to concentrate on basketball at the college level. It was a big reason he ended up at Georgia.

Twice, Marshall was the boys basketball AP Class A player of the year. During the spring of his junior year, he had all but decided he wanted to pursue a basketball career first. Georgia head coach Mark Fox was interested, but he was hoping Marshall would be at Georgia on a football scholarship. Football has an 85 scholarship limit, basketball has 13.

At that point, Georgia’s offer to Marshall was as a quarterback. But it only wanted to take one quarterback in its class, and LeMay committed first, that spring. So Georgia’s offer wasn’t there anymore.

But a conversation during spring practice revealed to Ledford that his star was having a change of heart.

“He said he didn’t want to play football. (But) I asked him if he was being recruited as a defensive back would he have more interest in playing football, and he said yes,” Ledford said. “So when Georgia found that out, they reoffered him as a DB. And that kind of gave him the opening to get back into Georgia and possibly do both sports.”

But Marshall wanted to go to Georgia, keenly interested in being a two-sport player, and liked his main recruiters, Bobo and Bryan McClendon.
quote:

“Our initial conversations with him in recruiting was quarterback. That’s what we recruited him as the whole time,” Bobo said. “Then toward the end (Marshall) had a change of heart and wanted to play defense or another position. We felt he’s such a great athlete that we’d let him play whatever he wanted to play.”

Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Florida State also wanted him as a quarterback, as did Georgia (nearly the entire process). I was always lead to believe Georgia recruited him as a defensive back only. In short: Georgia made a mistake by taking bust Christian LeMay first, Nick Marshall's quarterback offer was no longer there - but he really wanted to be at Georgia so he could play both sports, then he committed to play as an athlete because that's what he wanted to do. He was such an outstanding athlete, Georgia wouldn't turn him down.

Is this how it all went down?

You pretty much have the info right there in print, what else should we say?

No we didn't. Hindsight is always 20/20, at the time it was by far the right move. Tech wanted him so bad because he was better suited to run their offense. Lemay was an absolute beast in HS. His junior year he threw 44 Tds and only 2 interceptions. It's easy NOW to say it was a mistake, but at the time it wasn't. Plus, he also had plenty of talent as a DB, and played some sparingly his freshman year.

I thought they were just recruiting him as an athlete and he decided he would see the field as a DB at UGA rather than at QB(mainly because of Murray)

If he would have went to Georgia as a QB no one, but Georgia fans would know this kids name. He can't throw. He works in Gus's system. Richt's system would not exploit what he does well.

Articles can be misleading. Admittedly, I didn't follow his recruitment because Auburn didn't recruit him during this time. I didn't know if I was reading the right material.

'tis what I am using in this case.

Nick Marshall may not have been on his level in high-school, but he was a badass himself.

So if we recruited him at a different position, that means he wouldn't have stolen money from his teammates?

I mean I wasn't there in the living rooms during recruitment but I don't see any reason to ignore the article. It was always my understanding that we wanted him solely at DB and not QB. That article says otherwise, so I'll defer to it since I'm sure they did more research (and have quotes from our coaches). At any rate, as mentioned, when Lemay committed that put a stop to any such recruitment from us for him at QB.

He can throw. He made some great throws last year. It's just that he made some awful ones, too. If he gets more consistent, he'll be scary good.

He can throw far. He can't throw accurately.

DJ was a dropback passer. You know not EVERY black QB is a scrambler, right?

He can, he just hasn't been able to do it consistently.

I don't think there's any real reason, he's just one of the thousands upon thousands of guys who simply don't pan out.
