What are the Texans fans expecting out of this year?

I imagine there are some of you on here that are Cowboys fans but if I recall correctly on the pro-team sports thread I started a while back I got the impression that this may be the only major conference school that has as many Texans fans as A&M does so just a few questions.

1) Looking at the Houston schedule I don't see why they would do worse than 8-8. The AFC North and the NFC East aren't the easiest draws in the world but the Redskins, Cowboys and Browns are certainly beatable. You got the Jags twice, at Oakland, and the Bills at home. Also, neither the Steelers, Ravens, nor Titans made the playoffs last year. So what overall record would you predict?

2) How is Clowney being drafted #1 being perceived by the fan base. As I've said quite a few times on these boards I'm pretty pumped that the Texans will be starting 3 Gamecocks on defense, and considering how close A&M is to the city I'm hoping I'll be able to make it to a game or two this year.

3) QB. Are the Texans just planning on riding the horses they already have into battle or are their talks about acquiring someone else?

Does that mean there is an open spot on their bandwagon?

They have a lot of things to correct and questions to answer before I can say they will be 500. QB play will be huge obviously and hopefully the new coaching staff won't repeat the same stale play calling patterns of years past. Clowney will be expected to make an impact right away because getting pressure on the passer will be huge to prevent some of the secondary breakdowns they had last year. Two other SC guys will play big roles in the secondary. DJ. Swearinger, really needs to step up this year and Joseph needs to show he has something left in the tank.

More than anything they were one of the thinnest teams in the NFL last year and I don't think much has been done to correct that. When guys like Cushing, Joseph and Manning went down they really struggled to find anyone remotely competent to replace them. Injuries, and replacing injured starters, are a huge part of today's NFL and I still think they're really thin as a team. I'm going to predict 6-10

Myself and most of my friends were pleased. I know it wasn't as popular on here but I think Clowney working in the shadow of Watt and in a Crennel defense will be very dangerous. It would be hard to drop him into a better situation

There were rumors they were after Mallett but it looks like Fitzpatrick will be starting. I'm glad they didn't reach for a guy they didn't want in the draft just for the sale of "taking a QB" honestly. Just seems like it's setting yourself up for failure and caving to fan demands. Next years QB class is great and I don't expect them to be contending this year anyway

I will never understand people trying to shove a legend from their school down the local pro team's throat. It's setting both up for failure. I would much rather see the Texans get a QB they are comfortable developing and working with and JFF go to a team where the staff truly wants him than a marriage forced out of fan pressure that isn't comfortable for either party

I don't disagree, Shane.
I feel the same about Former Students as coaches (see Dat Nguyen, Gary Kubiak).
It rarely ends well.
I wanted Johnny in Houston so badly I could spit.
But time has passed ... and common sense has set in.

Garnet ... to answer your question: huge improvement (always room on the Texans' bandwagon).

Too busy being mad at Houston over the draft.

Also, the shipment of common sense EKG received is apparently on backorder for me.

Check back later

Yeah if I'm not mistaken he became a starter much earlier than expected right? I didn't know if it was because of injuries or because he was doing well in practice / pre-season but I remember being a little surprised when I first heard of him starting.

He was definitely a fan favorite here. Has he gotten any taunting / helmet to helmet penalties yet?

This is good news. Always watched the NFL and kept up with who was doing what but never really got into any team, Panthers included, so I've never really had an emotional attachment on Sunday. Truth be told I'm not sure I could handle heartbreaking losses on back to back days if SC lost on a Saturday and my pro-team, if I had one, lost the followng Sunday.

Combo of both. He was wildly inconsistent. He'd make a great play and follow it up with one that would leave you scratching your head. The potential is definitely there though. And yes I'm pretty sure he got flagged for a hit or two

Welcome to most of my life as a Texans/Aggie fan

You should make it down to Reliant for a game though. Great stadium and pretty solid tailgating for an NFL team.

Sounds like DJ. Here is the a video that epitomizes him vs Arkansas a few years back.

LINK

If you don't care to watch it goes like this.

Play 1) DJ flagged for horse collar tackle.
Play 2) DJ flagged for helmet to helmet (though replay shows it was a legit hit, not to the head)
Play 3) DJ pick 6, throws ball into stands, get's flagged.

It's a classic case of overemotional. You can tell he loves to play and you love that about him, but sometimes he has trouble honing that energy and it costs him and the team. Sometimes via overpursuit or stupid flags.

I've always thought the Texans do have the best looking logo in the NFL.

DJ sucks arse. He's a box safety we drafted way too early(4th round would have made sense, not 2nd). I've never seen a guy celebrate after making a tackle when the RB runs for a gain of 8 for a first down or for the QB overthrowing a pass after like 3 completions in a row in this territory. He's got a long ways to go before he's an average player.

Anyway I don't have high expectations for Houston. We'll probably end up with 6-8 wins due to mainly a weak arse schedule & division. The QB is one of the worst situations in the league. However our OL is strong (even with a weak right side) and our run game can be good too when Arian stays healthy. On the D side our front 7 is going to be straight nasty if Cush comes back healthy & Clowney plays like he's been billed.

Nothing good, Foster isn't an every down back. Shitty QB play = shitty QB play. I was hoping to at least trade up and get Manziel late or take advantage of Murray being snubbed, but none of that happen. We got another QB who "Can make all the throws" hello Yates how's the bench doing. Sorry to hate on Bortles or Bridgwater but I was unimpressed by them not sure what it is but their decision making amongst other things drive me crazy. And never watch a game with Carr because I'm still sore about that. Defense wins championships, however when they are on field 75% of games because our QBs throw picks.

The Cowboys support among Aggies is greater than the support for the lowly Texans.

I think 8-8 is reasonable.

I support the Clowney decision and see that they're trying to build a strong defensive core of young players. QB wasn't too high on their list this draft or offseason because they want to build a stellar defense. I think they just want to start a solid game manager at QB and added a solid TE and OL. Who knows. But I do like what they're doing on defense.

I expect maybe 6 wins.

The defense will be really stout, but that does't matter because the offense will leave them on the field the whole game. Can't win without a QB and Houston has jack shite in that department. I can't believe this is a major NFL franchise and our options are Fitz or Keenum. Unreal.

Yeah I remember hearing that is a state wide thing outside of the greater Houston area, which A&M seems to be on the border of.
