Apparently Slive thinks a new NCAA subdivision is definitely going to happen.

It's going to include the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac 12. He outlined seven goals, which are:

• providing the full cost of attendance to grant-in-aid recipients

• fulfilling the health, safety and nutrition needs of student-athletes

• allowing student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility to complete their undergraduate degree without cost

• ending the cold war against agents and advisers so that players testing the professional waters can receive better information

• harnessing the demands of sports so that student-athletes get more balance in their lives -- i.e., another crack at the "20-hour rule"

• more and better assistance for academically at-risk student-athletes

• giving student-athletes a role and a vote in NCAA governance that affects them

If that happens, it will widen the gap between the five bigboy conferences and the rest - Mountain West, C-USA, AAC, etc.

But I could also see a benefit to it from the potential 9 game SEC schedule. Play 6 division games, one permanent cross division game, two rotating cross division games.

OOC schedule could then be a game against a school from one of the other four AQ conferences and then two games against non-AQ schools.

And I think this is what deeprig6 was referring to yesterday when he inadvertently made mention of "talk of a new conference."

This new subdivision has made sense for a long time and is long past due.

It should not be governed by the NCAA however.

They should get 5 years to do so, anything more is ridiculous.

Hell, I'd be in favor of giving ALL student-athletes FREE tuition (not room and board/supplies etc.) for all classes post-eligibility.

That way they could get a real education when they're ready for it at a lower cost. I would include graduate school in that if they qualify.

He's also for 9 games. Let's hope he gets his way all around.

Heck, I personally wish that once the Big 5 conferences break away, that those schools only play schools from the Big 5 conferences. I couldn't care less about playing mid-majors, much less lower division schools.

Let's get rid of the cupcake games. Would make college football so much more interesting.

This is the only way a full on playoff system works, only play opponents that are on the same level.

I'm not sure if teams would be allowed to play Arkansas, though.

Agreed, big 5 D1 schools have no business bringing in D2 programs to mutilate them in front of a disinterested crowd.

While I hope this happens, some of the 5 need to expand and include more of the non-AQ schools that have the resources to compete. Every conference should have between 14 and 16 members.

I actually like all of that. Really hoping for the new division. It will be no excuses on schedules considering we all play the best of the best, and plenty of teams will have two - three losses if they ever expand to 8 playoff games (please in the next 5 years).
