From TBS...

quote:

-- Top-ranked national recruit A'ja Wilson (Columbia/Heathwood Hall) will make her much-anticipated announcement on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at her high school on ESPNU. The feeling that we got on Sunday afternoon is that North Carolina is the biggest threat to the Gamecocks as their recent run in the NCAA Tournament seems to have helped them a little.

Following Wilson's visit to South Carolina back in February, the feeling was the Gamecocks were in excellent position to land the 6-foot-5 forward and that feeling has continued through the weekend. After speaking with people around the Gamecocks’ program, the feeling is still confident but Wilson has not indicated to them she will definitely being joining the program. We are told that the Tar Heels’ staff also has a level of optimism based on some feedback they have received following the McDonald's All-American Game.

In the end, we still believe the Gamecocks will be the choice based on the relationship that has been built between Staley and Wilson, along with her friendships with signees Jatarie White and Kaydra Duckett and her familiarity with the program. We have heard nothing lately that would lead us to change our prediction that she ends up with the Gamecocks when she announces this coming week.

That's sounds good, but I read this the other day.

LINK

Sources tell me that the girl ranked #1 in the high school class of 2014, A’ja Wilson, will be staying in the South to attend college. Rumor has it that Wilson will be going to North Carolina, joining a roster that’s chock-filled with blue chip players. There was no explanation given, but North Carolina, with nine guards and three forwards on the roster, need an anchor in the paint and Wilson would fill that spot. She would also most likely start in her freshman year, a draw for many young women.

If true, this leaves UConn without an incoming post player for the second year in a row. The current recruiting class consists of three guards and a wing. The returning post players for the Huskies next season are Kiah Stokes, who will be a senior, Morgan Tuck, a rising junior, and some kid named Stewart. While an incoming post player would have been nice to have on the roster next Fall, it wasn’t a must-have. But unless Geno Auriemma has a surprise recruit that he hasn’t revealed, recruiting a post player is now urgent. IF the rumors are true.

Random internet person sounds legit...

Not saying it's not true, but I'll wait until tomorrow afternoon to say for sure where she's going. I honestly thought UCONN was the only real threat, but UNC had a great showing in the tournament and they are a young team. I would just hate to lose another top player from this state to those heels...

It could very well play out that way, but if it does, then it would either be a huge WTF moment based on Wilson's position all her recruitment, or she did an artisan's job of fooling everyone, which I wouldn't understand why. I guess she could've just changed her mind, but that falls back toward the WTF position....

According to the above posted The Boneyard rumour, it only plays out if Wilson agrees to become a mainstay post player for UNC, which admittedly they do have a definite need for. Mavunga has been an all-conf. post player for them and should continue to do so, but she's more of a F at 6-3, and then they have 6-2 F McDaniel. 4-star 6-2 Fuller was redshirted this past season to recover from and injury and should be in the mix for PT next season.

But Wilson has been adamant her entire recruitment that she wants to play the 3, step out towards the 3-pt line, face the basket, shoot jumpers and drive to the basket. That's NOT playing the role of "anchor in the paint", and Wilson has insisted many many many times that's not what she envisions for herself.

Her role sounds more like what DeShields does for UNC. UNC has a ton of SG, W (wing), and SF players all 6-0 to 6-2 that will play in the areas Wilson wants to play at. DeShields, Gray, Bryant, McDaniel all have that role covered, and most of them will be Jrs or Sos next season, and all of them were highly rated 5-stars or 4-stars that undoubtedly expect to be out on the floor playing and not sitting on the bench watching someone else play....

So I can't imagine that's the best fit for Wilson if she has been truly serious about playing the Wing role in college. It was one of the reasons why most felt all along that UNC would be ruled out once decision day came around....

In other words, the posted "rumor" on The Boneyard directly contradicts Wilson's publicly stated position during her recruitment, as far as what she wants to do in college...

The crazy thing about this class is that they aren't really going to be filling holes (aside from the PG, maybe). Nearly everyone from this years team will be back... Should be fun next year.

Foul trouble isn't going to mean shite for this team. Unlike Clemson, we actually deserve to use the term "We Too Deep".

Well, I might tend to disagree when it comes to refs keeping SEC schools down in the post season.

Giddy up. A'ja is a Gamecock.

FWIW I was there. (Two of my girls graduated from HH.) From the time we walked-in around 2:30, the word was she was a Gamecock.

Did we seriously ever doubt she was going to be a Gamecock?

Greatest pick up since Clowney (both were #1 overall recruits) decided to stay instate and go to Carolina. Also I'm going to throw this out there, we need Diamond De Shields to win the NC. If only to keep her away from TENN which would be a nuisance to us.

When she was being recruited these were here schools

Connecticut (now in the ACC and will play a weak conference with Cards and Rutgers leaving)
Maryland (moving with Rutgers to B1G)
Duke (mioving to the hated rival probably does not get a release from UNC)
Tennessee

She is from Norcross (which is between Atlanta and Athens) so I could see UGA, UT, or USC if she wants to stay closer to home. Out of the box thinking is UK where MM has been known to pick up players who transfer

Gray came from UNC to UK
Chowning came from Xavier
Pinkett came from NC State
Walker came from Uconn
Stallworth came from Cal
Snowden came from Dayton
Riley came from LSU

MM has already gotten a 6-6 transfer from OK for next fall

I can see keeping her away from UT being a plus, but where would she play? Would you really bench Mitchell coming off SEC POY? Welch is already going to be getting pressure from Wilson for playing time. Asia Dozier was streaky, but she gave us some good minutes. Are you going to put her at PG? Post is locked down with Ibiam and Coates (who should really be on the floor at the same time as much as possible...). Then you have the rest of the four and five stars coming in this class. We just don't really have a spot for her, IMO.

Kids come in and kids transfer because they are kids. Diamond will have to sit at least 1 year so wherever she winds up it will mean her playing 2 years from now (and a loss of 1 year of eligibility) so you have to think that way.
