the longest running supported Operating System of the modern era ends today.

Just for some perspective Windows XP released in Oct 2001. OSX 10.6 released in 2009, is no longer supported by Apple, Android Gingerbread, the Android OS released in 2010 is no longer supported either. I will not argue that Apple is not a prettier, more user friendly system, but Windows XP is the OS that brought us into the OSs as we know them today and is still regarded as the industry standard of stability and interoperability.

A PSA, if you're still using XP for some god awful reason, you will stop receiving updates for security purposes. A few free security softwares i'd recommend if you don't have one already:

Im loading xp on a dual boot machine today. it has to run some old shitty manufacturing software, that comes on the old 3.5" disk.

Ive spent probably about 12 hours trying to get xp to work on this new machine. been a nightmare

My work still uses Windows XP on their systems. debating whether to bring this issue up to the IT department.

supposedly 95% of ATMS still use XP as their core OS.

it's hard to get programmers off of it.

As an IT professional you absolutely should for security purposes alone. No reason not to be on Windows 7. It's the GOAT OS.

Now, that being said, hopefully they have DLP and some good security at the gateway.

XP was definitely the best bang for the buck of any Windows OS.

With 8+ years worth of innovation, I'd hope so.

Not always the case, but it is in this one

Windows 8 is an abortion. I wiped it from my new computer and installed 7.

i really like 7 but my work laptop is touch screen so i kept 8 on it. there are some cool features if you have a touch, other than that keep 7 running.

True but remember what an abortion the first version of 7 (vista) was. Windows 8 could go the same way.

I don't why. Developing for Windows 7 is indentical to XP, there are more features to take advantage of in 7.

windows 7 stripped out a lot of fluff. a lot that changed what programmers can do on some backend stuff.

DOS is still the command line that you program in for a windows based system but there were quite a few changes from XP to 7.

unless you are saying a program written in visual studio 2005 won't compile in visual studio 2012 it really should not be the end of the world. And keeping up with the march of technology is part of being a developer

Nice I have a couple of lenovo think pads with XP loaded on it to run service on older life safety systems (which of course requires it).

I blame UL mainly because it only takes about twenty years to get something approved and stamped through them.

Linux is the direction the industry should have taken but what do I know...

Put the Ubuntu OS on your XP machines and call it a day.

For those that want to keep XP around for old software or some other reason, consider creating a virtual machine on newer hardware running a flavor of Linux or newer Windows.

Download VMWare player. It is free for non-commercial use. Create a virtual machine, install XP, and you're done.

XP was designed for hardware as it existed over a decade ago so it doesn't require a really beefy PC. Allocate the VM 512MB of ram, install XP, install whatever old software you want to keep using, and you're cooking. If you don't need internet access, don't give the VM a network card and you're forever immune from any threat.

If you do need networking, once you get it set up and running as you want just copy your VM to an external hard drive. If the XP machine gets trashed by an exploit, just copy the master in and get right back to it.

I've got a Win7 laptop with both Ubuntu and XP VMs running on it right now and they work like a charm. In the near future, I'll have OS X running on the same hardware.

Finally, if you've got an XP box that is installed and running everything as you like it, you can download and run vCenter converter on it to create a virtual machine out of the live system.
