To start this improbable run, Anthony Grant has kicked Carl to the curb. That is an excellent start.

Here Grant talks about hope for the future and us heading in the right direction:

quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — Sporting some slick new glasses, Anthony Grant stood in front of a few hundred faces at the Alabama basketball banquet.

The floor of Coleman Coliseum was covered in the most loyal Crimson Tide basketball boosters Tuesday evening. They honored seniors, but the message was more about the future following the program's first losing season in 14 years.

"As a coach, my vision, my belief in this program and our players and the direction we're headed in no way shape or form has wavered," Grant said, his voice echoing through the empty arena. "I think if you look at the results we got, we didn't get the final results, but I can tell you this about every game in my memory, we were right there. We're not far, even though the results, the final win and loss numbers don't say it, I think we are close.

"As a program, we're not where we want to be ... yet."

The Tide went 13-19 last season and lost its SEC tournament opener to LSU. Athletics director Bill Battle gave his backing to Grant the next day after public pressure mounted.

"In no way am I discouraged in any way," Grant said. "I'm excited about the guys that we have returning to our team. I'm excited about the new pieces that we're going to add to our team. I'm excited about the prospects as we move forward into the future."

Grant spoke about stepping out of the comfort zone while acknowledging the 2014-15 schedule will be every bit as difficult if not more so than the last one. The final details are still being finalized.

"Our promised land is playing for championships, whether it be in the regular season or the postseason," Grant said. "We cannot be afraid to put ourselves in the position to face those giants."

The faces of Change

What will the bigs look like next year in terms of who it will be and what they bring to the table? Who will handle the ball? Obasahan (spelling?) gets his motor going to fast and loses control not to mention he can't shoot consistently. Do we turn to a true freshmen or is Tarrant the answer? What does his skills look like along with the big transfer?

As of right now, our bigs are Hale, Taylor, Kessens, and Jacobs. Who knows if Jacobs will be here next year? I also expect us to sign one more post player this spring. Kessens put up very good numbers at Longwood both scoring and rebounding. From videos I've watched, he has a nice shot much like Green did.

Tarrant, Coleman, and Key. Probably Retin some too.

I would think Tarrant initially. His numbers are too good and he has 3 years of college experience to be beat out immediately by Coleman. If Coleman can hold up on defense, he'll get a ton of time though.

Between Tarrant and Coleman, I expect their assists and scoring combined to be more than Releford was able to contribute. It'll be nice having two points on the team.

I noticed via a tweet that Jacobs was at the banquet. Did anyone mention his status? It would be nice to have him back off the bench as he can score.. it's just frustrating watching his rebounding or lack thereof

You might not want negativity in this thread, but unfortunately, we have lost our last real height presence in the paint. And his speech involved a lot of "I thinks" and not "we are" because he is covering his butt. The kids we have coming in are tiny by SEC standards. Frankly, if you think we are going to the Sweet 16, you're delusional. I love Alabama basketball, I love it, but I am a realist and Alabama will be lucky to win ten games next year with our schedule. Realism may be negative, but it is better than living in a delusional state of positivity with a lifeless program. In all honesty, the old Wendy's slogan fits well for us here: "Where's the beef?"

Being a realist is fine and all, but why go out of your way to post negativity in a thread with optimistic people? I don't think any of us really expect the Sweet 16, or even the tourney, but half of being a fan is overhyping your team before they play.

I didn't. I even asked nicely.

You're so realistic, you know how many total games we'll win before a schedule is even released!

I think we'll have a roster capable of making the Sweet 16. Since you don't want any negativity I'll leave it at that

The second part of Grant's plan was to get Key to transfer. I like it. Key couldn't shoot, made boneheaded decisions, and really isn't a high major player. Now this gives us 2 free seats for players to jump on to the sweet 16!

Grant said he doesn't anticipate any changes to his assistant coaching staff.

Interesting development from our leader, but maybe it'll work out?

@marctorrence 8m
Grant says Nick Jacobs has resumed strength and conditioning workouts with the team. No change in his status, though.

I know Bryant is having a little fun, but let's be honest. We were a lot closer to be a 10 win team last season than a Sweet 16 team.

That said, we're totally making the Sweet 16 next year
