Regardless, the 3-point shot by Hodge that found its target in the waning seconds of the 1989 Southeast Regional game of the NCAA Tournament in Atlanta's Omni not only gave South Alabama an 86-84 victory over Alabama, it gave the program a spotlight. It not only was a win in the NCAA Tournament - still the only such win in school history - it was a win over Alabama, a team that had refused to play the Jags until forced to when matched by those who drew up the NCAA Tournament bracket that year.

quote:

At halftime, Arrow slammed his hand into a chalkboard as he and his team entered their locker room, knocking a hole in the chalkboard that was permanently affixed to the wall, almost breaking Arrow's hand. He was stern, but delivered a message that his players may have been surprised to hear. "He said, 'We're going to do this, this and this and we're going to come back and this is how we're going to win the game','

quote:

Lewis jumped in the air, spotted Hodge standing wide open well behind the 3-point arc on the right-hand side, and passed him the ball. Hodge did not hesitate. He pulled in the pass, jumped and shot the ball, which hit nothing but net for three points and a two-point South Alabama lead.

So, Bama is with the Ole Miss/Valpo and Kentucky/Duke last seconds shot loss lure of the tourney?

Arkansas has last second shot wins over Louisville and Duke in the tourney.

There were actually a few seconds left, but Alabama missed a jumper that would have tied it.

Yes. I think it was something like 3 seconds left.

Fun fact, Finebaum said he would crawl on his hands and knees to Mobile if USA won.

He didn't, but he did drive to Mobile and crawl the last 100 yards.

I remember that game like it was yesterday. My family had a place at Seascape in Destin at the time and I was an 8th grader on spring break there. Bama led 49-31 at the half and Peanut Butter and Jelly went crazy in the 2nd half. That one stung as that was a good Alabama team. South Alabama came close to upsetting the eventual national champion Michigan in the 2nd round. In fact, South Alabama SHOULD have upset eventual national champ Arizona in the 1997 NCAA tournament. They had that game won with about a minute and a half until Arizona stole it in the end.

P.S. I'm almost positive that South Alabama has won an NCAA tournament game since 1989.

We sadly haven't. Been very close and had some teams that should have- 2009 when we beat #18 Florida at their place in the regular season comes to mind.

We don't play instate teams.

:ook what happened when we agreed to play Auburn again in football back in the 40s, nothing but a headache since.

Ugh, I as at that game. Still can't believe that ball didn't go out of bounds on the inbound pass.

I personally don't fault the Alabama's and Auburns of the world for not playing their instate teams in football or basketball. Nothing to gain and everything to lose, its just business.

South had a pretty good team in 1991 but lost to Utah in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament.

they had Cedric Yelding at point guard that year I believe. They had a good bench it seemed as well.

the Sun Belt Tournament was at the Mobile Civic Center that year if I'm not mistaken. I remember when South beat Old Dominion to win the tournament. In those days, it seemed like there were some respectable crowds at the games.

At a time when there was a lot of good basketball being played in the state - Alabama and Auburn had good teams each year, Gene Bartow had UAB on a good roll and Alabama State and Jacksonville State had solid programs at that time as well - South Alabama produced one of the most exciting, and for the Jags' program, the most important, wins of the season.

totally opposite of how things are today

except UAB is still doing alright?

I've said it before. It's not Bama's responsibility to help USA's (or UAB or Troy) athletic program.
