MONTGOMERY, Alabama --- The Alabama Senate has approved a bill to authorize the University of Alabama at Birmingham to study the use of a marijuana-derived oil to treat seizure disorders.
The vote was 34-0.
The bill, named Carly’s Law in honor of 3-year-old Carly Chandler of Birmingham, whose family has fought for the law, now moves to the House.
The bill passed today is a new version of legislation pushed at the State House for weeks.
Lawmakers supporting it said the decision by UAB to study the use of cannabidiol was a breakthrough. Under the new legislation, UAB's Department of Neurology would be the only entity authorized to prescribe cannabidiol to treat people with epileptic and neurological conditions.
The plan also calls for lawmakers to seek $1 million from the Education Trust Fund to help pay for the study.

They're pushing to legalize the oil here for the same reason. The news talked to two families who moved from here to Colorado so they could legally administer their kids the oil. Supposedly the shite works.

I hope it does for the kids' sake. This is the way to get it legalized, and it's what will grow support for it. If there is a true medical reason for it, then it should be available.

This might come as a shock but talking to several Libertarian lobbyists/activists in the state two things stood out.
Alabama/Kentucky will be the first two southern states that agree to something similar to Colorado/Washington at some point in the future.
The Alabama GOP will endorse Rand Paul right before the primary. If he is wins New Hampshire, and finishes top 3 in Iowa then he has Super Tuesday locked up.

Something like a 1/3 of people with seizures have resistance to treatments as well. Anything that can open doors for those folks is great. And having kids at work on seizure meds the side effects can't be any worse.

My dog has seizures. Can I haz marijuana?

Legalization within 5 years. Book it.

It's going to be on a lot of ballots in 2016. Believe that.

fun filled fact... you can already purchase CBD oil legally. it is extracted from industrial hemp (less than 0.3% THC) thus entirely legal for import. my step mom is on it for her brain cancer.
there are 80 something other cannabinoids, several wit great properties. can't help but to think they were designed to be used in tandem, not individually

Please, for the love of all things great, pass Carly's Law! The backwards arse hats/conservatives in this state have a huge opportunity to do something that is actually worth a damn here. We can only hope they make the right decision.

Just watched "WEED 2" documentary on CNN last night with Doctor Sanjay whatshisface. It was pretty well done. I never saw the first, but this one followed a little girl having on average 75 seizures a day. It shows her having one and its absolutely heartbreaking to watch and see the toll it takes on her life and her families lives. The family ends up moving away from their family and friends to move to Colorado where a medicine for her is available. Early results saw her seizures drop from 75/day to 10.
I recommend watching the documentary but its infuriating.

Baby steps is how change is made. Good for Alabama to start seeing the huge number of "pro"s that legalizing weed can bring.

I'm sure they will, though it won't be as convincing a vote as it was in the Senate. The Senators couldn't get out of each other's way yesterday to get to the mic and be on record arse supporting it. Pretty funny considering most saw it as an uphill battle a few weeks ago.

yeah i really hope they do the right thing but i wouldnt be surprised if the house tried to blow it up or attach some stupid shite to it.

As long as there's a cogent effort on stopping people from smoking it, I'm game.
Nothing is safe when you smoke it and there are far too many easier ways to take your "medicine".

Its coming.
Arkansas nearly passed medical in 2012. We are likely to pass it this November.

I dont know if they will go that far. Georgia just passed a similar bill to the one in alabama. Much more regulated then anything on the other two states mentioned. Strictly enforced to just academic institutions. I think its even more restricted than Ole Miss's program
