I'm thinking about buying a cheap metal detector for under $200 or so. Probably go to some civil war battlefield and find some coolness. What's the best one I can buy in my price range? How hard is it to find stuff? etc etc

Also is it legal to take a metal detector to a civil war grounds? I bet I could find a musket or bullets.

1. Go to beach
2. Find hammered drunk kids possibly underage
3. Wait for them to leave, run, or get arrested
4. Go scan where they were sitting
5. Profit

$200 won't get you much detector. You might try Craigslist and get lucky. A lot of people get the urge and then flame out quickly.

If you buy new and want a good, versatile detector, plan on spending at least $750. Here's a list of some good detectors.

It's very hard to find stuff. The longer an object has been underground, the deeper it is. Cheaper detectors go down only an inch or two. The more expensive the detector, the deeper it will probe. Also, there are tons of metallic wrappers, beer can tabs and other shite that masks real coins or other treasure. The expensive detectors will distinguish metals, even shapes of objects.

It is not legal to use metal detectors on or near any civil war grounds I've ever visited. Furthermore, most parks forbid it.

In summary, private property and public parks policies make it difficult for the detector enthusiast who is looking for keepsakes. You have to be really committed to the hobby to get any pleasure from it.

It's illegal to remove any relics from national parks.

Yeah but some yards were former battle grounds. I know the house I grew up in was a former civil war burial ground. When digging for a pool we found a ton of Civil war relics. Musket balls, knives, hatchet, powder pouches, and all kinds of buttons. Luckily all bodies had been excavated. At least I hope so. Found a few pre 1900's surveying tools as well when digging for a vegetable garden. Most of it I sold to a collector.

ETA: just got conformation that the yard was a temporary burial site for the hospital. That was around the corner. The hospital is now a resident house. Still standing. People still live there.
