This story makes zero sense. I'm sure you can find some bass-ackwad assisstants who think this will happen because they are bass ackwards themselves, but seriously, can you imagine Saban or Miles or any coach going into a living room and saying, "Don't go to Missouri because Michael Sam was gay. They protect their players and you don't want that. You want to go to a school who will not protect you."

Or a coach saying, "Come play here we don't allow gays on our team." Another asinine statement. Schools that get top 20 classes don't resort to stupid shite like that because it is stupid shite.

Then again, look whose name is on the byline. Welcome back to sensationalist reporting, Mr. Thayer Evans.

I wish he would have just STFU. Not because he is gay, but because this will be front page for a long long time...

If it was used at all, I'd try to spin is as if Missouri kept Sam from publicly coming out to the media because they didn't want to have a gay person on their team. The whole team knew about it in August and he was comfortable with people knowing, so what prevented him from telling everyone else?

Might those "SEC" assistants be Missouri coaches?

ETA: In fact the following few sentences make it seem like that is exactly what the case is.

He didn't have much choice because NFL scouts already knew and if he didn't break the story himself it was gonna come out in the media anyway. Make no mistake, this was a very calculated move by Sam and probably his agent to get out ahead of the story and own it rather than it be written about in national media *without* him coming out. If the latter had happened, then not only is he gay, he was a gay person who was trying to hide that fact from NFL executives looking at drafting him, potentially setting them up for a later PR circus that they hadn't signed on for. This was the classier move on his part to just let all potential employers know exactly what they are getting and they can make decisions about it however they wish.

LOL no. Thayer attributes the quote to an "assistant at another school" i.e. not Mizzou. Quote:

The outpouring of support is what makes the following news so disheartening. Multiple SEC assistants say that Sam's coming out will be used by rival schools to negatively recruit against Missouri. "Coaches are going to be all over this," said one assistant at another school.

But are you accusing him of fabricating the quotes by coaches at other SEC schools? I get that nobody likes him and that nobody wants it to be their own schools assistant coaches who said this, but does that necessarily mean that SOME assistant coach somewhere in the SEC didn't utter those quotes? Even a crappy journalist like Thayer would get canned and sued for making up quotes that didn't exist...

Actually the negative recruiting aspect wasn't don't go there because he's gay but rather why did Mizzou hide it:

quote:

"It's a powder keg just waiting to explode," the assistant said.

The assistant predicts that opposing coaches will pose a number of questions. "Why did [Missouri] cover this up?" the assistant said. "What else are they hiding? What were they trying to do? Keep a secret society?"

He added: "I can see it getting really ugly."
:

An odd way to approach it but then again those who are going to negative recruit probably aren't going to be so blunt as to say something like Mizzzou had a gay player which is a big whoop dee doo as far as a negative tactic goes.

They've already ran out of angles for this, so now they're making shite up. Pathetic.
