I'm sure there are answers all over the web but I figure I'll ask you guys first: Why is there an influx of underclassmen declaring for the NFL? Are they all really ready? Is it a bad thing?

I know, it's a stupid question and I've got ideas on the why, just want to see if what everyone else thinks is close.

The rookie wage scale. Not as much emphasis on getting in the first round and want to get to the second contract as soon as possible

I thought that the money question would be a platitude.

Are they actually ready for any kind of NFL ball?

I think the risk of injury in staying an extra year is becoming more of a factor.

I was also going to ask if anyone has seen a rise in catastrophic injuries. I feel like last year was one of the worst so far (haven't looked up any statistics) but it just feels like there are way more injuries these days.

Well, being a Gator fan might make me have a little bit of a bias.

Well that's the big question. I thought Ego and Freak needed another year and it remains to be seen. Are they going to be washed out before that 2nd contract? Who knows.

Everyone saw the Marcus Lattimore injury, and Knile Davis' lost season and worthless Jr. season got a lot of publicity too after he beasted the last half of his sophmore season.

It's the agents and the runners telling these guys to get out early and get paid. The agents and the runners want to increase the number of players they rep so they can increase the chances of signing more rep'd players. It's just a numbers game for them.

Ahh, I hadn't really thought whether or not the agents had a big hand in this. I really wonder how many of these guys are going to be playing in Canada these next few years, because there are definitely a few who are just not there talent wise.

Huge hand. They are the ones telling these these kids how high they are going to go, regardless if it's true or not.

They are just thinking that if they get to league minimum by making a team, they come out ahead. This is true for anyone who makes the team. For those that don't they get a little chump change, a solid chunk of cash for the signing bonus, and then they have the option of paying to finish their degree and try to get a job or try their luck in the CFL or other semi-pro leagues. In the end, it is probably a wash for most. Most of the guys should be close to a degree, so it shouldn't take that much work/money to finish it, then they at least have the chance to grab a coaching job or grad asst or perhaps somewhere else on the frontside of the business or another venture. I am not sure why people get all worked up about it.

If all these hits are going damage your brain, you might as well start being paid for it ASAP or stop the hits.

At some point this has got to come to a head though. There are only X amount of spots available in the NFL. The draft entrees seems untenable to me.

Here's a nice, short article
quote:

The number of early entries has been going up each year since 2011, and this year it spiked from a record high of 73 in 2013 to 102. (Four of the early entries have graduated from college.)

quote:

If it’s not an anomaly, the NFL will have to do something in order to keep the curators of the league’s free farm system happy.

I'll believe that when I see it.

I wonder if the simple Market Economy will cure this in time. There's no way all those guys are going to get a job, except the very best. The NFL could help by gathering information and giving an unbiased report on the pros and cons of leaving early.

The wage scale thing just doesn't make much sense to make your decision on. It really only affects the very top guys in most scenarios hitting that big contract, especially when you consider that the average career is only 2-3 seasons and won't even get to that 2nd deal. Most players except at key positions would just be cut for cheaper labor when the 2nd deal time would come around rather then resign an average player at the higher rate of a 2nd contract.

That kind of goes with my Market Economy sorting this out. This is all kind of new but in a few years, when what you said is clearly seen, maybe 3rd round guys and lower will think twice.
