Why do you think people take sports so seriously?

I've seen a loss just devastate people. I mean full on depression for weeks. People get shot and killed over a game. I remember reading a few years ago about a bar fight over a big 12 game where one guy got his nads cut.

Why do people let it affect them so or look down on others just because that person cheers for another team? I respect what these student athletes do, but some times the fans just ruin it.

Enquiring minds want to know. What say ye?

I'd say it's just the culture here in the south that we grow up in. Our environment is conducive to this train of thought. Like anything else this isn't 100% of the population in this part of the country, just larger than anywhere else.

It started in the 20's. The south was still looked down upon by the rest of the country. Alabama beat mighty Washington in the rose bowl and the rest is history. It gave the south something to take pride in at a time when it was raining shite. We've taken it way too seriously ever since. Humans, particularly southerners, are a proud race.

The big 12 fan getting his nuts cut off was likely either fabricated or an isolated incident. SEC is king of crossing the line.

I just graduated in May, and have really gotten better about keeping my emotions in check. I think it's helped moving away from Tuscaloosa, to a place where far less people give a frick about CFB.

I can now enjoy the highs of Alabamas success, without suffering nearly as much when we lose. It's nice.

Bc so many of us have had success, we talk so much shite like it will never dip, then have it thrown back in our faces when it comes back. People talk shite. Human nature brings it to the next level. Extreme measures are taken. Yada yada.

I don't get how someone can actually hate another human bc of fan affiliation. If bammers were born and raised in La, most of them would be LSU fans. Vice versa and for all schools. It reminds me of gangs holding down a block and acting like the entire world revolves around that block.

I grew up in Southdowns, close enough to hear Tiger Stadium on rowdy Saturday nights.

Where's my mommy and daddy I'd ask the babysitter, and she'd say hear that noise, that's where they are, at a LSU football game.

That's how my infatuation began, pretty damn early in life.

And I've loved almost every minute of the ride.

I don't think it's exclusive to the South at all. You hear crazy stories about what happens after soccer matches around the world. I would attribute it to immaturity because I know when I was younger (6-13), UF losses used to ruin my next few days but as I grew older I learned that football isn't nearly as important as it used to seem. I guess that comes from new responsibilities and priorities.

In small town Texas life revolves around Friday nights. It's a natural progression to be passionate about your team. There are always goning to be people who let that passion get out of control

Eh, OP edited thread title to "sports" instead of football. I was giving the explanation as to why we as a region of the country are the way we are in regards to college football.

I can't speak for soccer hooligans, no idea why they're batshit crazy, but it would appear that the answer is "pride"

Whether that be pride in their country or pride in their city's club. It's just a way of saying to someone else "we're better than you" even though said fans never scored a goal or a touchdown.

People whose lives are lacking in those things that are truly invaluable tend to quantify their existences, based on the "stuff" that they're able to amass--to include their favorite team's win/loss records.

Immaturity mixed with alcohol. There is a certain segment of my fellow Bama fans that embarrass me.

We're having a great run. 3 national titles, two SEC titles, something like winning six straight 10+ games a season, great recruiting, the chance to compete for titles every year, going to another BCS bowl and playing Okie...yet after the AU game some Bama fans melted down bad and sent death threats to a kicker. Pathetic

Yeah I edited it because soccer was brought up. It's really sports wide if you think about it

This is a good theory that likely applies to some, but it's an overused generalization of the over zealous fan

We all take it seriously enough to talk about it, and sometimes fiercely argue about it on the internet with people we've never met. We truly are the 1% of sports fans and we realize this when few if any of our other friends do the same. Embrace it gentlemen, life is short.

Because the south has historically sucked at everything except football. It's the only time the south can claim to be better than other regions. (Not south bashing)

You're certainly entitled to your opinion re: my simplified theory; but I'm of the opinion that being content w life, counting one's blessings, and modeling the golden rule for young kids tends to make folks less likely to destroy property, internalize a poor showing by a sports team, and/or act like a pouty jackass, resultant of a game.
