10/1 or Undefeated is What Happens when a Team Combines the Spread w/ a Defense

Pinkel's system is the new spread...the SEC spread.

1. We spread you out with our 6'5" receivers
2. We keep your defense honest with our running game
3. We spread your brains all over the field with our defense

Results? Mizzou's 2013 season or undefeated (considering of course that SC isn't living on a prayer when you play them).

Missouri has had a magnificent season. But it is still my opinion that when elite teams clash, you win more consistently with an offense that can control the pace of the game AND a good defense.

When everything is clicking perfectly, the spread is harder to stop, admittedly. But when you face an elite defense, things don't click perfectly, and I don't think the spread is as effective as a balanced attack in overcoming this.

You do realize Bama's second team would at least break even in the SEC. Not since the Switzer/Selmon teams of Oklahoma has has the NCAA seen the depth of Bama.

Yes. Or at least "very good", and possibly "great".

My point is that along with a great defense, the ability to control the clock is very important when playing an opponent of equal ability. Against weaker teams, the HUNH can roll all over them, but when two teams have defenses that can challenge your timing in a significant way, I think the HUNH is more of a liability than an advantage in those elite games.

By great do you mean the lower half of the SEC?

If so then yes..

LINK

Mizzou's secondary has given up the 2nd most yards.

You play A&M next week...

It's very good, however historically, when you have a secondary that ranks 115th in the nation, you cannot hide that forever.

USCe had a mobile QB and threw it down Mizzou's throat. Unless AA&M mailed it in, that game will likely go the same way.

Regardless, Defenses are graded as a whole. As such, average....

This is a good question for Missouri and auburn. To a lesser extent, for Alabama as well, since our big games didn't turn out to be elite opponents...but manhandling LSU and blowing out Ole Miss make solid statements.

At least Auburn beat aTm. They aren't good, but Missouri's best win is probably Ole Miss.

We've won all the games on our schedule save one. Either the SEC is an overrated conference or we're a decent team. I'll let you decide.
