The methodology for our study was straightforward. We considered all of the regular season games from 2012 and the first five weeks of the 2013 season. For each game, we recorded who won the game, and we collected football-related tweets from all of the SEC college towns for one, two, and three days after the game.

Thus after each game, we were able to calculate the sentiment of the fan base. We determined on average how positive a fan base was after a win, and how negative they were after a loss. To understand the “volatility” of a fan base, we looked at the delta between the average sentiment after a win and the average sentiment after a loss. In other words, how big is the difference in a fan base’s “high” after a win and “low” after a loss. We believe that this metric best captures “living & dying” by the performance of your team. After computing this metric for each fan base, we determined that LSU has the most “volatile” fans in the SEC.

quote:

The volatility of LSU & UGA fans is driven more by extreme negativity after losses, whereas the volatility of Ole Miss fans is a function of high levels of happiness after wins. This could, of course, in part be due to expectations. UGA & LSU fans may have higher expectations than Ole Miss fans. An examination of the data reveals that LSU fans had an extremely negative reaction to the Alabama loss last year and the Georgia loss this year. These fans even had an overall negative reaction to a close WIN over Auburn last year!

#1 is no surprise. Anybody who has spent any time on the Tiger Rant or listening to sports talk in Baton Rouge knows how bipolar a lot of LSU fans are. Thought 2 thru 14 would make for interesting discussion here though...

ETA: Data is from about a month ago so it doesn't factor in some recent meltdowns or euphoric reactions to wins that transpired as October unfolded.

That study was basically done by using tweets. bama ranks last because a large portion of their fanbase can't read or write.

Pretty fricking sad for the amount of success that Ole Miss has on the field. Just a bunch of egotistical douchebags who think they are better than everyone else.

I think your hatred for Ole Miss may be clouding your ability to comprehend what the people who conducted the study actually said.

I have several problems w this analysis (I'm a researcher, by occupation)--the least of which is the appropriateness of the analyses (a content analysis of tweets and/or a frequency count of one from of social media?).
But I have to admit that it makes for some fun Internet fodder.

The fact that the SMU cheerleader was able to push him back like that makes him look like a major pussy.

No doubt it's far from an ideal way to poll or do a statistically meaningful sample but I'm sure it's a far easier and cheaper method than conducting a real poll. Also, CNN and Fox pretend Twitter is the real voice of the people so what the hell? Maybe we can get these dudes from Emory to let Chicken mine his site for similar analytics.

Indeed.

And far more data driven than the usual anecdotal testimonies we get around here.

Though I didn't need any poll or research to confirm for me that LSU's fanbase contains more negative to the extreme nellies than any other college football team in the universe. It what it is.

Maybe we can get our friends at Emory to find out for us.
