Anyone Have An HD Projector In Their Home?

Just about done updating my downstairs living room, and still can't decide between a big plasma, or a projector. I've been impressed with some projector set ups in friends' homes, but not sure if that's what I really want as I've seen some that are just terrible. I have the space for it, and already have trashy drop ceilings(I know, wasn't in the budget to re-do those this time), so running wires and shite won't be a problem.
Price difference isn't all that much. I'm about 85% on going plasma right now, unless someone can sell me on the projector.

how big of a screen can you fill in the area? whats your budget? How far do the seats sit from the screen?

Seating would be about 10'-12' away, and the wall area could accommodate pretty much any standard home theater size. Not that big, but bigger than a TV set. If that makes sense. The wall is 8' high, and it runs almost the length of the house on the side I want to put the TV - about 30'. The optimal area for viewing is about 10' wide.
Budget is pretty flexible, but not much more than $2-3k. I know with a projector I have to figure in mounting it, screen, wires, etc. Plasma would be ready to go out of the box.
It's all pretty flexible right now as we haven't even ordered furniture yet. Updating was putting new carpet down, painting walls, adding some outlets, re-doing the bathroom, etc. Want to figure out TV set up before I order furniture.

Get a TV. Projector is cool, looks great, but is impractical after a while. It takes at least a minute to warm up and turn on, you have to have blackout shades which makes your room dark, and it is almost impossible to get one of those things on a universal remote or app. They look great, sound like a great idea, but unless you are investing in a big screen to project on and don't want to sit in a dark room all the time, go with a TV.

That's kind of what I was thinking. The room is already pretty dark as it is kind of a basement, but it does seem kind of impractical.

I have a 70" LED Sharp Aquos and I wouldn't trade it for the world. They even make that model in 80" and 100" sets.
I paid $1600 for mine. I'm sure you could get one of the larger versions within your budget.
ETA: Did some research for you by looking at Best Buy (you can find better prices out there, just using them as a reference).
80 inch for $3300

Looks like a nice TV, but I'm doing plasma or a projector. I'm not a fan of the LED's and I can get a decent 60" plasma for around $1500-$2000.

Spleen. I'll get back to this tomorrow. Just got home from the vet. Have a dog in pretty bad shape. I'll set you down the right path. I'll have a few more questions.

They have paint you can use so you don't have to get a screen if you still want to look into a projector. I'd love one for games and whatnot.

Get a TV. As mentioned, a projector is impractical unless you're going all out for entertaining.
I had a projector home theater but it couldn't compete with the impressive TVs on the market now. I dumped it for a big screen TV. Been happier with the TV.

Panasonic, Pioneer, LG, etc are all gonna stop making plasmas.

Hate to hear that about the dog. Hope he/she pulls through. Just put my dog down in May and I miss him everyday.
