Targeting - Changing the game

Now that we are starting to see the impact of the new targeting rule who thinks we'll see an increase in post routes?
It would seem there's very little risk in the offense throwing high across the middle to a tall WR.
If the safety backs off or goes for the ball WR has the advantage.
If the safety tries to dislodge the ball there's a very good chance he'll be called for targeting, and even if overturned you're getting a free 15 yards.
There's also the chance the call won't be overturned and their starting safety is out of the game.

Why not?
The NFL has been doing it for years. Just throw it deep and make sure your get a PI call.

I'd also be willing to bet that contact lower body injuries have gone up this year as a result.
But remember, it's all about protecting the players.

Oh we all know the rule could very well lead to some nasty side effects (lower leg injuries), but what coaches do you think will or have adapted and are taking advantage of it?
I'm relating this to how RGIII mentioned trying to draw late hit flags on the sideline.

My biggest gripe is the fact that they are instructed to make a judgement call ERRING ON THE SIDE OF "SAFETY", and then the 15 yard penalty cannot be overturned.
One overturned "targeting" call can decide a game.

That will be reversed in the offseason, I assume. Too much momentum behind it to not.

If refs keep "anticipating the penalty" and start throwing the fricking flag before contact even occurs DEs will stop trying to hit the QB too.

FIFY.
Ramik Wilson made the hit of the year for UGA on a 4th and 4 dump pass across the middle. Perfectly clean hit, ejection was overturned, but Vandy was gifted 15 free yards into the UGA redzone and scored a few plays later to go up late in the 4th qtr.
The Ray Drew ejection was bullshite but the fact that Vandy got a free set of downs plus 15 yards all because an official 20 yards away from the play thought he might have seen something (video review proved he didn't) is an atrocity.

Unless you're playing A&M of course. In that case, not only won't you be flagged, but if you are, the ejection will be reversed.

That's not true. We're not allowed to target Johnny Hancock, just horse collar him.

Yeah, I can't tell you how many targets I saw that went uncalled this weekend. That's what's so scary. They could call this about 5-10 times in a game if they wanted.
At first I assumed it was associated with long throws and the safety trying to force the ball loose, but seeing it called on LBs using a shoulder to tackle, and Dlineman hitting the QB, this is very bad for football.
I guarantee you for every game with a bad targeting called upheld, you can find a targeting foul worse that they didn't call.
I don't understand either of the Georgia ones. If the WR hops right up to celebrate he clearly wasn't "targeted" if he's feeling no ill effect from the hit.

I would respond to this at length, but unfortunately I'm being held by the Aggies offensive line and typing is difficult.

I'm specifcally referring to this play:
That set the standard for targeting calls involving A&M.

I think that was when they were down by 10 or 13 or so and that score brought them to within 1 score. The point remains though. We get the ball there and bleed some clock, they don't come back. That play took the wind completely out of our sails and changed the entire complexion of the game.

If you watch every player on UGA's sideline and on the field, they were fricking jacked. It was the first time all season that a guy not only made a big stop by himself but with fricking authority. It was a statement play for the defense and it was immediately undermined by an official completely removed from the play. It basically told our defense that, even when they're doing everything right, they're wrong.

I'm curious to see unbiased opinions on whether or not fans other than MO think Riggs "targeted" in our game against them.
I'm too biased of course but I had a tough time accepting that one.

The gif I showed might possibly be a contributor to why our defense is so bad.
Deshazor Everett, having been suspended for the 1st half, comes into the 2nd half and makes a perfect form tackle ensuring the receiver doesn't catch the ball.
Flagged for targeting, ejected, AND THE EJECTION IS CONFIRMED, despite Everett's shoulder hitting the receiver in the chest and Everett's head turned to the side.
Refs basically told A&M on that day that "if you tackle properly, you will be flagged for targeting".

The sport is turning into soccer.
In the next few years defenders wont be able to go low anymore so there will be a strike zone for hitting the ballcarrier.

WR jumps up in the air while he's on his way down. DB running full speed directly at him this is the result. How can you specifically know where you're going to hit a wr when he's jumping and the db is running full speed?
I'm not saying that it wasn't a penalty, but that ejection rule is beyond ridiculous.
