This Change.org petition is being spread by my facebook "friends". Apparently it was started by the current UT Band Drum Major. I read it over, and think that she is being less than truthful with her claims, especially with the "SEC Policy" claim. Anyone seen this, or can rebut any portion of it?

Until The Pride of Southland Marching Band adds in a few synthesizers, a set of keys, and a few electric drum sets, I will be 100% in favor of piped in music in lieu of the traditional marching band.

) All athletic departments in the SEC have forbidden the travel of visiting bands without the consent of the host school’s athletic department head’s approval. For Tennessee, this means no school songs will ever be played in an opponent’s stadium. The players will be overwhelmed with the opposing team’s hostile fans instead of being rewarded by hearing their fight song played by the band.

I can't say for certain, but I really doubt that the SEC is going to prevent bands from going to away games without the home team's permission.

The bands are a huge part of the game day experience for both home and visiting teams. What the opposing school does with its ticket allotment is up to that school - so if they want to bring the band, bring them. More than anything lately the school budgets have been cut and it costs money to take the full band - which is why you see the smaller pep bands for so many games these days. I think I read that it cost $700,000 to send AUMB to Arizona for the BCSCG.

As for the band being the only entity allowed to play music "during play," no music, piped in or from the band is allowed during play - that violates the SEC no artificial noisemaker rule. Beyond that, unless they are discussing UT exclusively, schools already mix recorded music in with the band music. And doesn't UT do this already to a small degree?

I wouldn't be so certain. Just last month, while walking through the SEC offices (in Birmingham) I suggested we find ways to limit things that may have a negative effect on Alabama and enact things to piss off opposing fan bases. Mike said he'd look in to it.

A university official emailed a response. A copy-paste from facebook:

quote:

I appreciate more than you know that you didn't just join the herd and rush to conclusions. Let me try to hit the concerns top-line with the thought that we may issue some kind of statement at some point:

UTAD has reduced its financial commitment to the band in the past couple years. It's worth noting that in the past two years, UTAD has reduced its overall budget by almost $10 million. Virtually every sport and department have been impacted.

As a result the full band does not travel to as many away games as it has in the past.

We have not reduced in any significant way the amount of time that the band plays during the game. We haven't added "commercials." We've asked the band to work with us to better coordinate the breaks, with the goal being to make sure we're creating the best competitive atmosphere possible in Neyland Stadium. We have weekly Football Production meetings. The band participates in those meetings, there aren't any surprises on Saturday. The use of canned music is part of our overall strategy and can be an effective part of it.

A· We have not told the band they can only play "Rocky Top." In fact, we've told them that after we score, the Pride has the whole break. They can start with "Rocky Top" and then move on to other selections at their discretion. If we do anything on the video board during this time, it doesn't have audio, i.e. "Vols in the NFL" or "SEC Leaders."

We've said to everyone involved in football production, including the band, that we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard. The team deserves it.

A· We have not "threatened" to reduce the number of student tickets. In fact, we've engaged the student leadership regarding any and all student plans and we've consistently assured them that we will accommodate all students that want to attend, even if that means adjusting the allocation from year-to-year or even in-season. SGA leadership would be happy to back this up.

There is a whole lot of misinformation involved with this petition. Perhaps the saddest part of this is it comes days after we all witnessed the Neyland Stadium of old. While devastated by the loss, I was very proud of our team, our fans, and our students. It's a shame that some have decided to put themselves above the University as a whole.

Official University Response

quote:

The following statement is from the University of Tennessee regarding gameday atmosphere:

The University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland Band is a much valued and integral part of the University and the gameday experience. Their pregame and halftime performances are outstanding and are part of the fabric of our great football traditions here at Tennessee. Once the game begins, the band is essential to achieving our goal of an electric atmosphere in Neyland Stadium.

The Tennessee department of athletics is always looking for ways to enhance and evolve our gameday experience and atmosphere at Neyland Stadium in order to better appeal to fans, students, and both current and prospective student-athletes.

Our marketing department has been charged with developing a strategy to create more in-game energy in the stadium. Every Tuesday, a production meeting is held, and all entities that play a role in the gameday atmosphere are represented, including the band.

Several claims made in a petition circulated this morning have limited or no basis in fact, including the claim regarding the SEC and band travel. The visiting team still makes the decision about bringing its band to away games, and very few bands nationally bring their full band to all away games. What the SEC rule states is that the visiting band must communicate with the home team band director in order to determine if there is time for a pregame or halftime performance by the visiting band.

The claim that the band has been told never to play "Down the Field" is false.

As a clarification, the SEC provision states that the band can play in between plays, and not during plays. The band can play from the end of the preceding play until the point where the center is over the ball. The modification next year is that recorded music may be played instead of band music during those times.

The department of athletics has made a significant outreach to our student leaders and organizations, and our head football coach has publicly stated the priority he places on student attendance and involvement, as has our vice chancellor and director of athletics. The huge spike in attendance in comparison to the preceding year speaks to the positive response by our student body. The claim that athletics has threatened to reduce student ticket allotments is false, as athletics has pledged to student leadership that we will accommodate as many students that wish to attend football games as possible.

Additionally, any claim that the band will not be allowed to perform at halftime is irresponsible.

Despite the heartbreaking loss to Georgia last Saturday, we had one of the best atmospheres in Neyland Stadium that we have experienced in a very long time. We applaud our coaches, student-athletes, fans, students, the band, and our marketing staff for their collective efforts that resulted in a true home-field advantage.

Despite budget cuts impacting virtually every sport and department within UT Athletics over the last two seasons, the band's 2013-14 fiscal year operating budget ($1,125,669) is less than one percent (0.8%) lower than it was in 2011-12 ($1,134,669), attesting to the continued priority placed on investment in the band.

We are One Tennessee, and Saturday night brought that into clear focus. To reach our destination and achieve our goals, we have to stay on the same path. Our band will always play a major role in the Tennessee football gameday experience, and any insinuation to the contrary is inaccurate.

It sounds like they don't want them to play down the field after we score when they said the "pots" has a break after we score and can play if there is no audio on the video board.. But the only time it's played is after a score or during pre game on the field.
