Two biggest takeaways from Saturday's game...

1) It's time to open up the playbook. No more babying. No more caudling. Marshall was thrown into the fire needing one final 76-yard drive staring into the teeth of a quality SEC defense with less than 2 minutes left. He passed that test with flying colors. If that doesn't give him confidence within the offense, nothing will. Now he's been there, he's done that. Time to quit running 10,000 bubble screens and 10 Statue of Liberty plays every game. No excuse for our playcalling to be this conservative going forward. We're going to need Marshall's passing and more offensive variation as we hit the teeth of our SEC schedule.
2) It's time to play our best players. There are waaaayyyy too many positions -- defensive line and linebacker immediately come to mind -- where upperclassmen have been entrenched as starters only to get the same lethargic production game after game. A defensive line including Craig Sanders, Nosa Eguae and Kenneth Carter isn't doing anything to stop the run or get any kind of pressure on the QB. Jake Holland doesn't have the athleticism to anchor an SEC defense at MLB if you care about being respectable on that side of the ball. Marcus Davis stepped up on that final drive and gave us some stability at WR after we were victimized by some drops earlier in the game. Late in the game, we had Kris Frost at MLB and Montravius Adams and other freshmen on the line during key defensive series, and they came up huge. Enough of this upperclassmen favoritism. I hate it, and it's costing us. We have to start playing the most talented players on our roster. Period.
Our defense is what it is for the most part, but these two things really stuck with me as I've reflected on our game tonight.
Nice win though. War Eagle!

My only thoughts on this is they have opened the play book as much is they can. Our offensive line play was so bad tonight at times it wouldn't matter what play was called. While we don't run a blocking scheme which would require us to blow people off the ball we did a very poor job of creating any running lanes.

To #2 you should add OL too. I'll have to go back and watch the replay but we got 0 push up the middle. Too much talent on the 2-deep to see much more of that level of production.
That said, pass blocking was outstanding all night.

quote:State kicked our arse all night on the LOS. They've got a pretty good corps of veteran big men and it showed against our OL. The DL was getting knocked back some too.

Hopefully they grew up a little bit tonight.

It's the most disappointing thing for me tonight. I expected us to struggle at DL and LB just because of an overall lack of talent. They've shown flashes but we are what we are there, a little below average in the conference.
But I was expecting us to maul folks on the OL.

All of #2. I would rather lose with Frost screwing up alignment vs Holland getting pancaked blocked by a WR. If you can't produce, let someone else's have a chance.

1) good teams find a way to win... Even in 2010, we had a lot of close games
2) Frost has to play, he was huge in the second half.

I do think our secondary has improved. Other than Smith, we were on them like white on rice last night.

Wtf was Fraizer doing out there instead of Wallace?

I would like an answer to this as well.

Just running the wildcat. Kiehl Frazier is a better runner than Jonathan Wallace, and I have no problem with him being in at quarterback just for that play.

Had to listen on the radio, and it was going in and out, how did the plays he was in the WC work out?

Wildcat package needs to go.

They went well. All resulted in positive yardage.

If they're going to run the wildcat, I'd rather have someone run it that we can afford getting hurt. We basically have 3 QB's right now, so we gotta do all we can to keep them healthy.

False.
Wildcat package without a passing threat needs to go.

I agree with opening up the playbook. Even with Cam they kept the playbook pretty slim until they were sure of him and let him have the reins.
I have a feeling that a 6/8 drive for 60 odd yards to win the game in the last 15 seconds will have an affect on Gus' decision to give Nick the reins a bit more.
