When did the 3 back set become popular again?

Arkansas is using this package this year - 2 fullbacks and a RB in a diamond behind a QB under center. I've been seeing other college teams do this, both from under center and from the shotgun/pistol. I saw it in the NFL today too.

I remember Green Bay started doing this a couple seasons ago or so and I remember it really surprising me seeing this from an NFL team. Did they start the trend?

3-5 years ago this was hardly ever used outside of teams that run the triple option. What other SEC teams have a 3 back set that's used outside of just goaline situations? What advantage was found that made teams start to adopt this that wasn't there before?

First I saw it was Okie State in 2010 with Holgorsen at OC. It can really create problems with a dual threat QB and and athletic TE to add to the diamond.

Ault was a coach at Nevada.

He worked on these pistol sets extensively.

I think he coached Capernick in college and now he works for the Chiefs as a consultant

This is the first time that I remember it drawing a lot of attention.

Good read.

It seems like Arkansas will use a 3 back set purely for power runs and maybe working some play action off it to sneak Small out of the backfield for a pass.

For the shotgun 3 back option package, it seems like you can get the same effect with just 2 backs, one on each side of the QB and that gives you another TE or WR to put out there to keep the D honest. But if it works, it works.

Florida was running some kind of pistol diamond formation to the tune of 3 yds a carry yesterday.

We ran it twice yesterday. One for like a 46 yard gain and then the second one for about a 4 or 5 yard gain.

From the pistol diamond formation, there are a lot of different combinations of options and misdirection. Really can create havoc when there's also a passing element with the wideouts, backs out of the backfield or an athletic TE in the diamond.
