Well we could NOT be worse than last year on defense. Poor tackling, angles, effort, game planning, attitude...

EJ will move us in the right direction, the defense has talent, but with our offense will never be at the top of the league. Think 2010. Amazingly part of Chizik's demise was getting rid of Ted Roof.... He was a better coach than many of us gave him credit for.

No doubt AU will be a force in the west for years to come.

Agreed, they will have the BBVA Compass Bowl on lockdown for the foreseeable future.

I remember after the 2011 season when many AU fans wanted the Gus Bus headed back to Arkansas as fast as it could get there. I guess Gus is a better coach than many AU fans gave him credit for back in 2011?

Thanks for the promotion to "Spokesman for All Gumps". It is a position I will hold with dignity and honor.

Ellis Johnson didn't say "this defense has talent". He compared to an outstanding defense at South Carolina and claimed it was better. That's coachspeak (and "coachspeak" is a generous adjective).

If you didn't want different opinions and wanted everyone to agree then take this to the Auburn board.
Did you even look at who started this thread?

Nobody knew back ten just how much Chizik had his hands in everything. So, what's your point??

Ehh, South Carolina wasn't that bad at stopping the pass...

In 2011, South Carolina finished 2nd in the SEC against the pass.
In 2010, South Carolina finished 10th in the SEC against the pass.
In 2009, South Carolina finished 2nd in the SEC against the pass.
In 2008, South Carolina finished 1st in the SEC against the pass.
In 2007 (Nix's final yr as DC), South Carolina finished 1st in the SEC against the pass.

It happens.....

Probably because teams rarely threw at you because your run defense was atrocious (USC 1st in the SEC in passing attempts defended per game). Arkansas ran for 542 yards on you that year. McFadden tied the single game SEC rushing record.

Run defense: 12th in the SEC - 209 ypg - 43 apg

I think they could end up being a lot like the 2012 OM team

6 regular season wins isn't out of the question, but I don't think it's likely.

AU's ceiling is 6-7 wins, OM's is higher than that.

Auburn has more talent than OM. Period. This will change if Freeze keeps this recruiting up though.

Chizik is just a horrid coach.

Malzahn will turn it around. I think since its his first year and Freeze's 2nd that their ceilings are about the same.

Yes I remember thinking that we were pretty good in the pass then I remembered that it was cause not a whole lot of teams needed to pass on us.

2011: SC finished 6th in the SEC against the run.
2010: SC finished 3rd in the SEC against the run.
2009: SC finished 5th in the SEC against the run.
2008: SC finished 7th in the SEC against the run.

So you see. The only time we were top 3 in the SEC against the rush was when were 10th in pass defense. Other than that we were mediocre in run defense.

Like I said most SC fans will agree he was a good DC but his ability to adapt in-game was non-existent. Again need I remind you of this..

quote:

South Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson believes that hurry-up offenses are ruining college football. Johnson made some terrific points during a radio interview with Bo Mattingly. Johnson said, “One thing that has gotten into it that I’ve been pretty outspoken, that I really think is starting to deteriorate some of college football is the hurry up offenses. There is nothing wrong a pace and speeding up the play on the operation side. I get that.” “But what’s happening now with the rules is that you can snap it as soon as you want to or you can sit on it for 40 seconds, and there is no in-between.” “Canadian ball is very fast-paced, but the offense can’t sit there all day long. They have a 20 second limit. The NFL cut it out with Buffalo in the 90’s, they kind of put some cold water on it a little bit with the Colts not too many years ago. What they realized is they’re taking the game of football and turning it into soccer or lacrosse. There’s nothing wrong with those sports, but that’s not football.”

Good call. Very unlikely. At least 7, probably 8.

Look, I was just proving the guy wrong. South Carolina wasn't near as bad in pass defense as some are leading on.

You also have this little nugget to go by...
quote:

Johnson's work at South Carolina is what fans hope to see Auburn replicate in 2013. Johnson's defenses ranked in the top 15 nationally in three of the four years he called plays as the Gamecocks' coordinator. His first defense in 2008 ranked 13th (291.92 yards per game), a drastic improvement from the previous season, when the Gamecocks allowed 378.1 yards and finished 56th in the country.
If you guys aren't satisfied with that, then I don't know what will satisfy you all.

Auburn fans would be ecstatic will that kind of defense again.

Like I said. Ask any SC fan about Ellis Johnson and there are two observations most will tell you about.

1) He is a fine DC.
2) However he has serious issues with adapting in-game. Lou Holtz, for all the good he did at SC, had the same issue.

Look at our games vs teams with the more prolific offenses in the SEC. Arkansas under Petrino, the SECCG vs AU, UF in 2008, UGA in 2009 etc. etc.

Well, I mean, those were good offenses...

1) South Carolina wasn't going to stop Auburn.
2) Bobby Petrino always torched Auburn, so I know how you feel.
3) Florida in 2008 was a juggernaut.
4) Georgia in 2009 was meh...

But, what you mainly see with the above teams, were that they were extremely good on offense. The defense is going to let you down sometime, but at least he had you guys ranked top 15 3 out of the 4 years. We couldn't even jump into the top 50 under Gene Chizik. That's really saying something when Tommy Tubs always had us at the top of college football.

some people are suggesting this is 'coach-speak'... which doesn't really make much sense. Usually coaches try to downplay expectations. Granted, he was speaking to an Auburn crowd, so that obviously played into his comments.

Or maybe EJ's just an idiot who doesn't know how to properly 'coachspeak'.

IMO, we have some decent players, but we're a loooong way from being competitive, especially on defense.
