Anyone ever sold jewelry to a store before?

I have an old class ring, size 13, made of platinum, has two diamonds, and a garnet center stone. It has sent in a drawer for 9 years.

There is a local jewelry store that's been around for 50+ years that buys old jewelry.

What can I expect to get for it? What's too low of an offer to walk away from?

Are there online alternatives that are better than the store?

well we would need to know the weight of the platinum and the sizes + 4c's of the stones. but more than likely not as much as you are expecting

I'll be happy with anything over $100

I don't know the cw of the diamonds, but we paid over 1k for the ring when we bought it from a jewelry store.

Weight of the ring and size/quality of the diamonds are needed to know the value of the ring. Know any of that? Any pictures?

If you can get me a weight in grams of the entire ring, I can give you a ballpark. more than likely the stones are not worth much at all, might not get anything for them

Pure platinum is around $50 a gram, so when you go to the store ask the guy what the weight and purity of the ring is.

Sounds like my $200 isn't going to hold up... I just wanted to try and use it to help lower the price on an engagement ring.

scrap price on platinum today by purity is...

85%... $43.08/gm.
90%... $45.61/gm.
95%... $48.15/gm.
99.9%...$50.68/gm.

One thing to consider or take note of is the fact that not all platinum jewelry will be platinum, but rather a metal known as palladium that comes from the same family as platinum. If it's not marked on the inside of the piece with a purity mark it's prolly palladium....

Scrap price on palladium today by purity is...

85%... $20.89/gm.
90%... $22.12/gm.
95%... $23.35/gm.
99.9%...$24.58/gm.

Gemstone prices depend on grade & carat....

Well looks like we might have gotten ripped off back in the day. This guy at levys says the ring isn't platinum and the diamonds aren't real. Oh well. The jewelry store we bought it from is out of business now, wonder why.

Eta: sooooooooo, $200? Haha

Take it to Bromberg's and tell 'em you're an AU fan. I'm sure they would help you out.
