I know NBC has started this... My question is.. Can ABC or some other major news outlet start naming winter storms....?

Wat

Are you asking if there's a law against certain entities naming storms?

No, but it's incorrect grammar to give them masculine names. Inanimate objects have the feminine gender in English. No one refers to boats, flags, mountains, and stadia as males, but we run around naming storms in the masculine gender.

These sentences are grammatically correct, but sound stupid:

"When Hurricane Hugo hit South Carolina, her winds and tidal surge destroyed large parts of Charleston. Hurricane Ivan did much the same kind of damage in Pensacola. Her winds pushed the water beyond Main Street and moved portions of the I-10 bridge."

Are you sure about that? I thought we had three genders M/F/N, and inanimate objects are really neutral, yet we tend to personify them as a gender sometimes

English doesn't have gender anymore except in sort of a vague prosaic sense.

Balzack going on about gender and grammar

going back to the OP, they can name them whatever they want. Names were/are only given so there would be distinction between storms

Casty all you want, but we're holding the line at Chez Balzack. Formalism for defense of the culture (and clarity)!

I thought TWC started this nonsense. I laughed my arse off when they got to Winter Storm Gandalf. Weather nerds.

They did. I think the one right now is Nemo or some shite like that.

It won't be legit until we have Winter Storm Stark.

NBC owns TWC.

And yes, the names are stupid.
Hurricanes only need names cause they are essentially one system and the big ones will stay together for a week or more.
these named winter storms form quickly and disapate fairly quickly. no time to discuss for days on in about "nemo" or the like.

Here's a LINK to a really good Gawker piece on the ridiculousness of TWC naming winter storms.
