How did your SEC school get their name?

I know how the LSU Fighting Tigers got their name, but what is the historical basis for the other schools around the SEC?

For example, Crimson Tide. Is that in reference to a red tide? Were did the elephant come from?

Ole Miss, I think the Rebel is pretty straight forward. But black bear? Wtf?

Miss. St., is bulldogs just a random thing? Same question to UGA.

Tennessee, Volunteers has to have some historical basis behind it?

Auburn, what the hell? Are you a Tiger, Plainsmen, or a War Eagle?

And the rest, aTm, KU, Mizzu, UF, USCe, Pigs, and Vandy...whatcha got?

Goes with school colors + connection to SC Revolutionary War Hero Thomas Sumter nicknamed the "Carolina Gamecock"

eta: Yes that is the same Sumter that Fort Sumter was named after, the same Fort where the 1st battle of the Civil War took place.

Tennessee had a huge number of "Volunteers" serving under Andrew Jackson in the war of 1812 and even more Volunteers in the Mexican war.

We have a Super Bowl victory over LSU to thank...

quote:

According to newspaper accounts and the history of the university, the Arkansas football coach Hugo Bezdek stepped down from the train to address the throng of students that came to meet the team. It was during his recounting of the 16-0 win over LSU that Coach Bezdek was to have said that the team played: "like a wild band of Razorback hogs."

That happened in 1909, we were the Arkansas Cardinals before that.

Really? You seriously don't know how your own school, the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas became Texas A&M?

An Eagle dropped shite on the head of a plainsman and a Tiger jumped his arse and ate him. So we are the Tigers and chant War Eagle as our war cry.

During the Mexican War, Governor Aaron Brown issued a call requesting 2,800 volunteers for military service; he got 30,000 respondents. The "Volunteer" moniker was adopted to honor residents' willingness to fight for the country.

I've read that over the course of American history, more Tennesseans have volunteered to fight than any other state in the union. I'm not sure of the veracity of that statement, though.

I always thought they got it from the 1926 Rose Bowl, but apparently not.

re: How did your SEC school get their name?

Razorback pigs had long been associated with the state(in the 1800's). They were known to be tough, a nuisance, and an oddity to outsiders. Arkansas residents were often called razorbacks as a derisive name. We were called the cardinals officially until 1909. Papers sometimes referred to the team as hogs as a nickname even before it became the mascot. After we beat LSU in 1909 legendary coach Hugo Bezdek called his team a "wild band of razorback hogs". Arkansas residents took pride in being labeled "razorbacks" by this point so the cardinal was replaced by Razorbacks.
