People seem a lot more willing to at least invite defensive players than they used to.

I think if Clowney has a monster 25+ sack season and the rest of the contenders don't separate themselves it could be interesting. If there's a Manziel-type season from another player he has no chance, though.

Well again, that is more sacks than he had the last two years so ...

but to act like it is a foregone conclusion that he won't win is stupid.

Not foregone, but it is highly improbable.

I think 20 sacks is the magic number.

that would most likely put him way ahead of any other player in the sack column

I think the problem for a DE type player is that the more hype he gets the more teams will scheme for him and the more his stats will suffer because of how good he is. You can double DEs and run away from them, which teams will surely do. Now this might be good for SC's defense as a whole because when offenses have to scheme against one player it creates problems for them elsewhere. But it might keep Clowney from having the kind of stats a defensive player would need to win what's basically an offensive award.

So you're saying that our opponents didn't scheme against Clowney much last season??

No, I believe they did, which kept his numbers down from the gaudy numbers it would take for a DE to win the Heisman. And the scheming will only get worse now that he has had his break out season.
