They're fricking USC. No team has a more attractive brand nationally. To top it off they are the unquestioned most high profile program in California.

They have no competition in one of the most talent rich states in America.

This.

No matter who the coach is or the state of the program, they will still get some of the top recruits.

They were the biggest disappointment in CFB and went 7-6 yet they have only lost recruits Lane Kiffin inevitably fricked over. USC brand is impressive

One other big point in their favor is LA has no NFL team and thus USC is the defacto NFL team. They are the biggest thing going in the Fall for a population of nearly 10 million, even though a lot of LA folks don't care about football you can't help but be successful with that going for you. USC is also a very good school that is private and thus able to coddle athletes more than a public school can even though it is in a crap part of town.

Texas gets some of the same benefit in Austin. It's a smaller metro than LA but it is a college football crazed area. They benefit tremendously from local businesses that buy luxury seating and boxes that may not have any affiliation with the school directly.

A couple more top 10 finishes for Stanford (3 straight now) coupled with unranked seasons for USC and that might not be the case.

USC will always be USC.

Neither coach, sanctions, death sentence, nor season record will ever change that.

That said, no coach should still have a job there only because of success in recruiting. It recruits itself, no modern coach has made this a new thing for 'SC.

Not all the kids have the grades to qualify for Stanford.

USC will still be USC to players in California. They are the football team of LA. There are no teams on the west coast other than Oregon that will be able to regularly steal recruits from USC. Maybe Stanford can compete but there is enough talent that it won't matter

Pretty sure up until Pete Carroll came USC was annually getting out recruited by UCLA.

If UCLA can get its crap together, it can really dent the USC brand. Much better part of town and still has all USC has to offer. But, USC will always get a ton of talent.

Yeah, but that's not the way it used to be. And it could certainly revert back to the way it was. USC has sub-par facilities and is in an absolutely atrocious (if not dangerous) part of Los Angeles.

I remember one player was hit on the practice field by a stray bullet, fired over a 1/4 mile away.

Not to mention that people in Los Angeles don't care about football. In fact, the entire state doesn't really care. At least not like they do in the South. We don't even have a professional football team here. You know what they care about? The Lakers. That's it. USC is an afterthought.

The reason they got those great players was because they were paying them, ala Reggie Bush and the rest of those 5-Star athletes.

That's obviously been well-documented.

Nobody cares about USC here in LA. They care about the Lakers. That's who they care about. The Lakers, then the Dodgers, then the Kings and then USC and UCLA... both in a distance.

Its a great school steeped in football tradition with an amazing venue and a huge fanbase in southern California. How they dont have the #1 class every year is the question.

Not sure what you're talking about. Amazing venue? The Colosseum is an absolute dump. It's so bad, in fact, that it's the reason that pro teams have refused to come to LA, because the city wanted them to play there.
