I think his current roommates (Sunseri and Ryan Kelly) are helping him move down this weekend.

Well, that's one down. How many more can we expect?

I predict 4 would-be 5th year seniors not returning and 1 or 2 medicals announced at the start of spring practice. Then another 2 or 3 transfers for PT during the summer.

Farewell and good luck Mr. Ely.

Time to eat some crow. After he committed, I defended him against one of the regular Bama posters (I don't remember who now) who predicted that he would never play a significant down for Bama. Although I guess I was partly correct because he came in for a couple of semi-meaningful plays against State when AJ was in the locker-room.

ETA: his passer rating was 656.8 against State

Anyone else thinking Blake Sims will transfer too? I think he will be a Jr. next year and he really doesn't fit in with Bama's offense. Also after the last 2 NCs the backup QB transfered. Star Jackson in 09 and Philp Sims in 11.

I wouldn't rule it out, but I would be surprised if BS transfers. He's got to believe that he has as good of a chance as anyone to win the starting job in '14.

Also, there are some reports now that Ely isn't transferring. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Blake could add a dimension to the offense that could really make it unstoppable. His ability to pass effectively is what has kept them from moving him.

He could be our JFF for a year. If none of the other QB's beat him out I definitely think we can win with him.

Colin Kaepernick and a few other mobile QB's are starting to change football.

Why would he transfer? He was the second-string QB last year and he's going to be the second-string QB next season as well. There's no way Saban will want a true freshman as the primary backup QB.

Sims was the backup QB because Bama wanted to redshirt Alec Morris and Ely hasn't panned out. Bateman will redshirt this year and Morris will be the backup QB.

I'm not sold on Alec Morris either. I didn't see a single throw in this clip that impressed me. LINK If Sims transfers, I see Bateman jumping ahead of Morris on the depth chart similar to how McCarron was basically the #2 QB as a true freshman in 2009.

Sims isn't going anywhere. His roll will continue to grow.

Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Phillip Ely is considering a transfer, according to a report out of South Florida.
Josh Newberg of 247Sports.com reports that Ely, currently third on the Tide depth chart, is looking into a transfer to the University of South Florida. The USF Bulls are an FBS school, which means that if he does transfer there, Ely would have to sit out a year.
Ely signed with Alabama in 2011 out of Plant High School in Tampa, FL. He was ranked as the No. 9 pro-style quarterback in the country at the time. He took a redshirt his freshman season, then saw action in six games in 2012. Ely went 3-of-4 for 42 yards and one touchdown.
Alabama was very thin at quarterback in 2012, but with AJ McCarron returning for his senior season and the arrival of Cooper Bateman, a four-star prospect out of Utah and Parker McLeod, a three-star our of Georgia, the thinking is that Ely may see his window closing at the Capstone.
Ely would join former Tide quarterback Phillip Sims in transferring. Sims left Alabama last April when it became clear that McCarron had entrenched himself in the starting job.
While not set in stone, this report makes clear that the battle for the No. 2 spot among quarterbacks will be hot and heavy going into the spring.
