And before anyone claims otherwise, VA Tech was a perennial HC opponent in those days. Four of their 5 wins in '79 were against Appy State, William & Mary, Richmond and VMI.
Another bit of trivia from Bryant's last undefeated season: Bama played three consecutive opponents - Vandy, Wichita State, and Florida - who finished their respective seasons with 10 losses apiece. The combined record of Bama's 11 regular season opponents was 47-72-2, a winning percentage of .397, the lowest ever for consensus national champ.

I've no prob with Bear's scheduling. Just glad he got his success though hard work and wasn't a proven liar and cheat. Guy had integrity and one of the greatest coaches ever.

If only the FAU game this year was before the Western Carolina game.
Bama would have played these 3 crap opponents in a row:
3-9 FAU
1-10 W. Carolina
3-9 Auburn
Almost as bad.

No, I don't work at a gas plant. Yellowhammers are the Alabama state bird and was also the nickname of civil war soldiers from the state. It's also the second line of Rammer jammer. I'm five years old.

What's even crazier is instead of given 8 SEC teams to play, we had to play #17 Florida State instead of a team like Vandy that Alabama had to play.

Well…when you win only 1 SEC title in the first 50 years of the conference, you tend to not talk about them as much as the teams that won them more regularly.

Not necessarily. The Big 10 had a "no-peat" rule until 1972. Meaning, if you won the Big 10 one year and then again, the second place team would go. Oh, and you would stay home and not go to a bowl as in the Big 10 you either played in the Rose Bowl or you couldn't go to another bowl until after the 1975 season.
This is why #2 Michigan State stayed home in 1966.

Not so much as being worn out and tired as it was not being able to guarantee recruits that he would be there for four years.

Bama's 1979 schedule: Baylor was a big game, or supposed to be. They had two superstars. I was there. I watched Dwight Stevenson (sp?) just erase Mike Singletary all night long. 45-2, I believe.
Bear wasn't doing anything sneaky or super-smart with the SEC deal. Nobody cared much. If they'd cared, they would have copied. They didn't.
Conference championships were a big deal in the Pac 8, the SWC, the Big 8, and the Big 10 due to bowl tie-ins. SEC and ACC did not have direct tie-ins. I just checked 1970.
Every SWC team (Cotton): 7 conference games.
Ditto Pac 8 (Rose). Ditto Big 10 (Rose). Ditto Big 8 (Orange from 1968).
ACC: irregular, like the SEC. See? Simple.

You know as well as I do that if AU needs/wants $$ to fund their athletic's all they have to do is ask. I know several AU folks right here in Monkey town with deep pockets. These same old farts were around during the Bryant years too.

They still crushed a Top 10 Arkansas team in the Sugar Bowl.

Bc AU was scared to schedule another SEC school. It was a way to try and sneak an SEC title by not taking as many chances to lose.
In reality, I don't know. I know Bama and Ole Miss didn't play each other for a few years in the 60s bc both teams were really good and they wanted to be able to get bowl bids/win the SEC. Vaught and Bryant cooked that one up.
