In my 40 years of watching college football i have seen small regional conferences merge to start forming mega conferences

Does anyone think we will see the demise of super conferences in the next 40'years

I hope so. I liked it much better when there were more conferences with fewer teams in them. I prefer a 12 team/2 division split.

Super Conferences will die out eventually when

1. The playoff system in place in the future makes large conferences counterproductive.

2. Network deals are less important to revenue than on demand live game broadcasts (aka the downfall of ESPN).

Super conferences are the love child of money and football. If a super conference setup is no longer the key ingredient in either, they will go away. Smaller conferences with strong regional ties are more logical and practical in every other way and for every other sport.
