If an SEC school wins each of the semi-final games then yes.

Since 1998, there have been 2 teams from the same conference in the top 4 8 times (2 of those years we had only 2 conferences represented in the top 4, which could have resulted in a conference pairing in the final. (All we can go on is final BCS rankings, which are done before the bowl games). Of those times, the two teams would have met in a semifinal (1 vs 4 or 2 vs 3) 2 times, negating a possible conference pair in the finals.

2001 -- #2 Nebraska vs #3 Colorado
2004 -- #2 Oklahoma, #4 Texas
2005 -- #3 Penn State, #4 Ohio State
2006 -- #1 Ohio State, #3 Michigan AND #2 Florida, #4 LSU
2008 -- #1 Oklahoma, #3 Texas AND #2 Florida, #4 Alabama
2010 -- #2 Oregon, #4 Stanford
2011 -- #1 LSU, #2 Alabama
2012 -- #2 Alabama vs #3 Florida

On the surface, it would seem like it, but I doubt it. The committee is supposed to "consider certain criteria such as conference championships and strength of schedule." Basically this will give the committee too much power imo. I wouldn't be surprised if the committee went out of it's way to seed conferences to play each other. This year it would be Florida (3) playing Alabama (2) in the first round. But if Alabama was #1 I could see the committee bumping Florida to #4 to prevent an all SEC game.

Got an honest question. Last year when LSU played Bama and LSU won, Bama dropped from 2 to 3. What in case of the this year Bama was 1 and UGA was 3 and then UGA drops to 4. Have a rematch in the next game. I don't like that having to play the same team again the very next game, mind up it will be a week or two before you play again.

Assuming that they allow 2 SEC teams into the 4 tam playoff....I'm not so sure they will. Right now they haven't even announced who will pick the 4 teams. I bet a good portion of them will say you have to win your conference to even get picked regardless of ranking. From what I have read so far it's going to be totally up the selection comitte and they can pick whoever regardless of rankings.

Yep, shoulda just kept the BCS formula to determine the top 4. Guess they're scared of 3/4 teams being from the SEC. This selection committee scares the shite out of me. Reeks of bias.

I totally agree - backroom committee politics scare me much more than the current method of choosing the top 4 teams.

I think it will be rare to get 2 teams from the SEC in the 4 team playoff. It's not the BCS top 4. It's a top 4 decided by a committee as others have said and you know how that gets fishy.

You'll see the winners of the SEC, Big 12, Big 10, PAC-12, and ACC all in the mix for 4 of those spots. One conference will be left out each yr. I would think you would have to have a sitaution like last yr with LSU/Bama being so much better than everyone else to get 2 teams in the 4 team grouping.

If they did it this yr Florida still may not have made it. Bama and ND would clearly be in. That would leave Stanford, Oregon, K-State, and Florida all going for the last 2 spots.

I bolded the bullshite.
Last year happened because of bullshite and whining by the darlings since 2003 when darling SC was left out because of they're strength of schedule.
Last year came to fruition because Bama lost at home. Had LSU lost at Bama, it would have been Bama and Oklahoma State in the NC game.

probably a dumb question, but where do these playoff games take place? Are they home games for #1 and #2, or do they play them in a bowl venue or something?

So really all we have is a plus one

This year you would have Florida sitting eating popcorn, while UGA loses and possibly gets pushed outside the #4 seed.

I think they should have 8 teams

Only 2 games is not going to work well.

they have a full year to tweak it

The committee sounds like the worst possible scenario.

Either use the top 4 from BCS and forget conference champions (just don't even play the games and use that week for one of the playoffs),

or

make it the 4 highest rated conference champions and forget top 4 - you have to win your conference to be considered.

Neither is perfect, but a committee invites even more of the lobbying and political stuff.

Like this idea, but it would never happen because of schools like Notre Dame. Also the big XII just got rid of their championship game and although i'm not a fan of Texas or OU they are too big time schools that would never have a shot.

No problem is going to be solved by throwing what is essentially more poltical appointees at it.

The only thing they have released so far is that the vote will be made up of "football people". What the hell does that mean?

What it means is that everything is back to what it was pre-BCS. They took all the non-bias elements (computers and strength of schedule) out because darlings like SC and Bama found it not fair to them that LSU played tougher schedules and won the conference. They prefer the "eyeball test" to judge teams. Of course, those same eyeballs never any penalties being committed by Bama, SC and other darlings and a few hundred thousand, houses and family trips do not occur under those same eyes while at they think Penn State should lose it's programs because what a former coach did to some boys

Agree that no problems will be solved. I feel like if they made it an 8 team playoff instead of 4, there won't be as much drama following the selection every year. If you can't get into the top 8 by the end of the season, then you don't deserve it. Of course we don't know how this committee is going to pick, or who the committee even is, so I could be completely wrong. I just feel that with the way it is right now, the difference between 1 and 5 is not much plenty of times, while the difference between 1 and 9 is at least a little easier to discern.

No matter what though, someone will always complain. It doesn't matter if they did a top 25 team playoff... number 26 is always going to feel shafted and cause an uproar.
