I posted this on the Rant thread, but thought we could discuss possibilities here.

CBS sports list:

Sonny Dykes, head coach, Louisiana Tech: Hottest coach with the least baggage. Kentucky reportedly won't consider Petrino.

Tim DeRuyter, head coach, Fresno State: The 49-year-old has the Bulldogs tied for the Mountain West lead in his first full season as a head coach. DeRuyter came to Fresno from Texas A&M, where he was defensive coordinator.

Ben McAdoo, quarterbacks coach, Green Bay Packers: Maybe a bit young at 35, but McAdoo is an up-and-comer. After six years as the Packers' tight ends coach, he is Aaron Rodgers' position coach this season.

Kliff Kingsbury, offensive coordinator, Texas A&M: The brains behind Johnny Manziel's breakout season.

Willie Taggart, head coach, Western Kentucky: Let's hope Barnhart doesn't look down his nose at the innovative Taggart. Kentucky hiring in-state Western's head coach? It could do a lot worse.

Edit: Didn't know who Tim DeRuyter was, so I looked him up. He was Texas A&M Defensive coordinator last year and coached them to a win in their bowl game, and is in his first season as Coach at Fresno State. They are 7-3 this year (losses to Oregon 42-25, Boise 20-10, and Tulsa 27-26).
Everywhere he was DC, their defense has gotten better. I'm liking him.

What a horrible list. Dykes is the only acceptable coach there.

These are ones I've seen various places. Obviously Petrino has been shot down by several outlets so I removed that one. From all account Dykes is the top target. No particular order here:

David Cutcliffe - Duke
Sonny Dykes - La Tech
Bud Foster - DC at Virginia Tech
Tommy Tuberville - Texas Tech
Butch Jones - Cincy
Phil Fulmer - Former Tennessee HC
Dirk Koetter - Former Arizona State, Current Falcons OC
Josh McDaniels - OC with Patriots
Ron Zook - Former Illinois and Florida HC

And just based on what I've read/heard in the last few days:

quote:

David Cutcliffe - Duke

quote:

Sonny Dykes - La Tech

Most assume these two will be top targets because of ties to UK or Barnhart. I've cast my lot in with Dykes. He seems to be the top target from all accounts. Neal Brown's name at Tech has also come up in conjunction with Dykes as a potential OC if Tubbs is headed to another SEC school like Arkansas.

quote:

Dirk Koetter - Former Arizona State, Current Falcons OC

I read earlier that he's shown interest in the position. I have no idea why (don't know who his connections are or anything like that). I don't know if he's just not happy in Atlanta or what.

quote:

Phil Fulmer - Former Tennessee HC

quote:

Ron Zook - Former Illinois and Florida HC

These two have also come up in several places, but generally together with Fulmer as HC and Zook as DC. I would kill for Zook as a DC.

I've said it many times already, but once more. Dykes will take us back to Mumme days, so if that is what Mitch wants, fine with me.

However, the wins and losses won't change significantly, but if the goal is to draw the fans back to watch us lose to Louisville 52-45 then so be it. That might be all that matters.

I want to compete better in the SEC, so give me a defensive head coach to start with. It might not appeal to the fan base who have been bored to death by Jokerball (myself included), but a slow and steady improvement will benefit us more in the long run in my opinion.

Mumme went 2-2 vs Louisville and his first win was a 68-34 win over them. A coach with a gimmicky offense will work for a little bit, and once the SEC defenses catch on, it's over. I think your average fan would take a 73-66 loss over what we've had the last 3 years.

Bho, exactly my point. The last 3 years have been dreadful from an offensive point of view, so anything would be an improvement.
However, if you actually want to compete for wins in the SEC, you can't go back to Mummeball. It might work to be .500 against UL, but it didn't get us any better than .300 against SEC opponents, and it wouldn't this time either. The SEC top to bottom is better defensively now than back them.

Mumme ball is indeed exciting, but it won't get us anything other than the offense being fun to watch against Louisville and the FCS schools. The defenses are too good and too fast for gimmick offenses in the SEC because it's not like teams in the WAC that Dykes is facing now that have a couple of gamechangers on defense, EVERY team worth their salt has several starting and the depth to have several on the bench. Im OK with Dykes getting it as long as he has someone who will actually get the defense on track now that these kids have to experience. Traditionally, offensive head coaches have defenses that couldn't stop a pop warner team (Petrino, Mike Leach, RichRod, and so on). We need someone who will run the football (at the right time) and we need to get rid of this 3-4 crap. You need an excellent corps of linebackers (not just one like Avery Williamson) AND great lineman who can get pressure on the QB if they're just rushing 3. Im just babbling now, but bring in an offensive mind if they like, but we need a defensive mind too. If we could grab a Sonny Dykes and a Zook as a DC that would be awesome. However, I just don't think any of that is going to happen. Barnhart just needs to take a look at the past coaches and what they've done and how it didn't work. Joker makes 9 straight coaches that left here with a losing record, and a lot is going to have to change besides just the coach.

Good post.

I hadn't thought too much about it, but I could probably accept a Dykes with a Zook as DC. Zook reminds me of Joker, kind of over his head as a HC, but a good coordinator.

If you are going to hire someone like that, I might be OK with it. I want someone who can provide SEC level defense on that side of the ball. It's the only way we become competitive in the SEC.

I guess I just want a guy that kids are going to be excited about playing for. Offensively or Defensively, I don't care. What I want is an attitude changer. Sounds a lot like Dykes is the favorite. But how good can he be without Franklin?

That is the key with Dykes certainly. I'm guessing Franklin deserves a lot of credit with where they are. The fact that they play absolutely no defense, is too mummeesque for me.

I would rather have a HC who is a defensive guy, but if they hire Dykes, I want a solid DC or we will be doing this again in 3-4 years.

Have heard Barnhart has some ties to San Jose State head coach Mike MacIntyre.

I know zip about him at this point. Didn't know if anyone else here could elaborate more on him.

I can picture the scene. The Kentucky contingent meets with him and leaves. He walks into Saban's office to discuss.
Saban tells him, "no hurry, there will be other and better offers". Smart walks out and never talks to UK again.

On a serious note, I'm really not sure how I feel about him. Alabama is obviously one of the best defensive teams in the nation since he's been there, but I'm not sure if most of that credit really should go to Saban.
I kind of think all Saban has to do is walk into the house of a 5 star recruit and flash his rings, and the recruiting war is over.
So, Smart is working with far superior talent than we have here. Can he coach up? Is he HC material? I really don't know....

Barnhart is interested in Rex Ryan, and has called or is going to call him via ESPN Insider.

I don't know that Ol Rex would be a good fit.

ETA:Did we even go 24 hours before the UK was at _______ Office talking to ______?

Are you talking about the Kirby Smart rumor? That was started on Bleacher Report, I just figured it was bullshite. It started as "Kentucky officials" entering Bama's athletic office, then changed into "Guys decked out in UK gear".

But the Rex Ryan thing was reported on Insider FWIW, which has a surprising amount of rumor/conjecture on UK's job search. I guess most of it is us being the first major school to fire their coach this season.

I don't know where it started. Just funny that it came so quickly.

This rumor is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. No coach is going to meet with UK in week 10 of their season, and to think that UK strolled into the Bama football offices for a meeting is absolutely ridiculous. No way Saban or Smart would do that. They are trying to win a Title. Maybe it could happen between the end of season and bowl, but not before.

No credibility with this bleacher report group.
