Would a randomly generated play work for an offense?

A lot of defensive coordinators study their opponents down to a science and pick out their tendencies and likes and dislikes, etc. A good defensive coordinator pretty much knows what play is coming next in most situations.
How would it work for a team/coordinator if they entered a # for every single offensive play (less the trick plays, fake punt, etc.) and put it into a random generator.
Whatever # comes up, that's what you run. I tried this on NCAA 2013. I wrote down each play, and randomly drew for the play call. I had a lot of awkward play calls, but it worked to perfection. This is the sweetest idea ever.
If Houston Nutt had used this during the D-Mac, Matt Jones years, we would have been national champions.

Deep fly pattern from the opponent's two yard line will work 0% of the time.

have any of Petrinos other plays worked this season?

I see what you're getting at. But no it really wouldn't work at all. Just as you mentioned about the D coordinator figuring out plays, the offensive coordinator figures out chinks in the defense's armor and exploits those weaknesses throughout the game.

Not really related, I did see somewhere several years ago that Stanford mathematicians had done an extensive breakdown of the numbers and statistics and all the variables and had determined you should always go for it on fourth down.

Meh. It's gonna change statistically once you do start going for it all the time on fourth down.

The "Ask Corso" play never worked on that football game.

Houston Nutt called a lot of randomly generated plays

Every great team has an identity. Being very good at a subset of plays far outweighs the unpredictable nature of random plays.

Would a random post do well on the rant?

Possibly, but if I had to guess, they were aiming for results to suggest going for it on 4th down. Otherwise it wouldnt really be newsworthy.

I thought Petrino already used this system?

It wouldn't change once you started doing it bc they weren't suggesting fake punting but rather approaching each drive with a four down mentality. Taking the opponent by surprise wasn't a factor. A friend was talking to me about this and said it has alot to do with the overvaluing of individual possessions. A turnover isn't as big a deal when you consider that converting a fourth down is an anti-turnover
