He really is, and has been ever since arriving at USC. He basically does stupid shite to spite conventional wisdom, and often to the detriment of his team.

"We have a 50 pound per lineman advantage, one of the best HB's in college football, and a QB who has only thrown 2 passes in his career? Our defense is gassed and we need to control the clock in the 2nd Half? We're in danger of losing an SEC game to one of the weaker teams in our conference? Heck, come out and chuck it three times!"

Testing out new QB. Expect pretty much every play next drive to be a run play.

Yep. One half of football clearly makes him a below average coach.

He won 11 games at USCe. GTFO.

I should have articulated better. Since recruiting is so important, Spurrier is saved and is still a top 20 NCAA coach.

I meant to say that he's a below-average strategist and in-game coach.

He's kind of similar to Les Miles.
His recruiting more than outweighs his mediocrity in other areas. But he IS clearly mediocre in strategy, adjustments, etc.

ETA: Spurrier continues to play right into Vandy's hands with this playcalling. They are going to lose this game and it will be basically 100% on Spurrier.

Spurrier never has and probably never will be considered an elite recruiter. He is however a very good in game coach. One of the best IMO.

he's not a below average coach, but he's not as good as all his sec championships indicate. The spread game caught up to him while he was in the NFL and now he doesn't have that advantage he used to have

Yeah because USC has constantly had 1st round draft picks choose them before Spurrier.
