Sheldon Royster to transfer. USC guys, how is this going to effect the defensive backfield going forward?

Minimally effect. Wasn't going to get much playing time.

Generally speaking, players who will be contributors don't just up and transfer.

He was going to start next year from what I hear.

Tough break, Rutgers bound it sounds like.

I don't know about on D, but they lost their #2 RB for a few weeks.

I believe Cadarious Sanders transferred in the middle of August, and correct me if I am wrong USC guys, I think Akeem Auguste is out for a month or 2 as well. I thought I read somewhere that he is, but I could be mistaken.

Correct. They are saying he is out "for a while." No real time table for a return.

UltimateHog, Shonn Carson (who you are thinking of) is out for a bit, but he was #3 RB. Kenny Miles will get carries behind Lattimore.

I knew I had seen that he was injured. At any rate it is going to get rough for USC if the freshmen that are there and the backups don't step up.

No I was thinking of Brandon Wilds, the guy that had 3, 100 yard rushing games last year when Latti went down.

Brandon Wilds was actually our 3rd RB last year. Shonn injured his knee early during the Georgia game. Brandon hurt his wrist and will miss the vandy game. Should be good after that.

Royster definitely had talent and Gamecock Nation was very high on him....he was expected to become a major contributor for us. Then his type 1 Diabetes became a factor: the USC coaches knew about it when they were recruiting him, and he was taking medications to maintain it.

But apparently the hot temperatures in Columbia (he's from NJ) turned out to be more than he could bear. It's the reason why he was red-shirted last season. He hasn't been able to get out on the field and practice with the team....he's been standing off on the sidelines in shade and out of the sun.

As an obvious result, he has been falling on the depth charts. I don't know why the team doctors and medical staff haven't been able to find a way to balance him with the local temps, but apparently it's all irrelevant now, as word is he's transferring back up north to Rutgers. I wish him well and good health.....

So he can't be in hot Temps due to his diabetes? First time I've heard that.

CB Cardarius Sanders never developed beyond STs and depth, and felt he wouldn't get much PT if he stayed, so he transferred out. Another CB in true freshman Rico McWilliams was having a stand-out camp but suffered an ACL injury, and will be RS'd. He was a pleasant surprise for us anyways, and wasn't factored in as part of the 2-deep to begin with. He could've performed his way onto it and been a positive addition, but losing him this season doesn't really impact the position...

The biggest loss appears to be projected starter at CB Akeem Auguste (Sr.). He had some career starts and experience in the USC secondary, and had proved to be a very capable cover corner in the past. The coaches are saying that he may return around mid-season, but if he doesn't progress enough, they'll apply for a medical 6th year for him to come back next season.

IMO that's the biggest loss to injury on defense thus far...hope that's the end of it too...

I don't have any family that deals with diabetes fortunately (I guess.....our family has more history with cancer than anything else), so I'm not that familiar with it. Only read what has been posted about it recently: apparently hot temperatures and the amount of physical exertion plays a role in the blood-sugar levels of someone with diabetes. Normally your BS levels are balanced by insulin injections, and if your BS levels get too low OR too high, it can wreak physical havoc. Apparently they had trouble keeping Royster's BS levels at the safe medium during his time at USC.....

We certainly have felt at USC that this season we'll have an embarrassment of riches at the RB position: Beyond Lattimore which everyone knows about, we have both Wilds and Miles who could be considered #2 RBs A and B. They have both produced on the field in big games (Miles has 982 yds on 211 carries - 4.7 ypc - and 3 TDs, with 3 100-yd gms, and Wilds has 486 yds on 107 carries - 4.5 ypc - and 3 TDs, with 3 100-yd gms), and are the top back-ups with the most experience.

Shon Carson was a very impressive RB with a bit more speed than the others (a regular 4.4 back at camps during his recruiting season), who actualy beat out Wilds during last year's pre-season for back-up to Lattimore when Miles and Eric Baker were sidelined with injuries.

Shon was back-up to Marcus during the UGA last season when on a STs play he suffered his ACL injury. He now has broken his hand, and looks like he will be lost for the season. Wilds will probably miss the first 2-3 games of the season with his ankle injury...

Mike Davis was being talked about red-shirting to get some separation between him and Lattimore - they are both of similar skill-sets as RBs, along with Wilds: bigger, more powerful TBs that run behind their pads with not great speed but with above-average elusiveness combined with power and size to get good yardage. During fall camp Davis impressed during his opportunities, and it looks like with the injuries the idea of a RS is off the table.

He'll probably be held out as long as possible to see if ML and Miles can hold the fort down until Wilds returns. We'll also have Bruce Ellington run some pkg plays, and of course have the 2nd-leading rusher last season at QB in Shaw available....

This. That being said, secondary depth -- particularly at corner -- is potentially a problem.

Royster was a guy you'd hope would've been right in the mix to replace Swearinger next year... but between his shoulder injury last year and diabetes just couldn't get on the practice field consistently.

Royster transfer aside, secondary/pass defense could be a big issue this year. Minus Clemson, every team on the schedule with a half-decent passing offense (UGA and Ark, ECU) torched Carolina's defense last year. Secondary is very young and thin.
