Has the university of Alabama ever had a former golfer win a Major in golf?

Just curious, I can't think of many. The guy yesterday came very close...along with the two from LSU.

Have you ever heard him tell the story about Bear Bryant's reaction to him winning the US Amateur? Bryant called him into his office when he got back to Tuscaloosa after winning. Pate thought Bryant would congratulate him, but he said something to the effect of "Son, you're on scholarship for the University of Alabama. You aren't supposed to waste your time playing for the damn US Amateur. You compete for the University of Alabama." It's a hilarious story

If they can claim Graeme McDowell, then there is that guy. I don't think UAB will allow it though...

Our golfers are good in college, but our golf coach doesn't prepare them to play in the pros.

Cool story, I would like to hear Pate tell it.

Even though he came in second, Thompson made a pretty good paycheck.

Webb Simpson $1,440,000
Michael Thompson $695,916
Graeme McDowell $695,916
David Toms $276,841
Padraig Harrington $276,841
John Peterson $276,841

Strangely enough, both the major won by Alabama golfer Jerry Pate (1976 U.S. Open) and LSU golfer David Toms (2001 PGA Championship) were at Atlanta Athletic Club. I think Thompson's finish yesterday was the 2nd highest finish at a major by a former Alabama golfer. I'm going to go ahead and claim another major for Alabama though. I figure the fact that Davis Love III and Tom Kite's daughters both recently graduated from Alabama means we can at least claim half of each of their majors (1997 PGA Championship and 1992 U.S. Open respectively) for another one.

Thompson actually transferred from Tulane.
(Of course the local news mentioned THAT first before they say he transferred to Alabama :)

Born in Tucson, Arizona, Thompson attended Tulane University two seasons until they disbanded their golf team after Hurricane Katrina. Thompson then transferred to the University of Alabama. While playing on Alabama's golf team, Thompson was the 2008 SEC Player of the Year.

Thompson now resides in Birmingham, Ala.

For some reason you left off the next guy that follows on the list above.

I don't think that was coincidence.

The funniest thing from following the U.S. Open thread on the more sports board was how the Rantards over there were claiming Thompson for Tulane after the first round. Once they realized he played golf at Alabama and had Alabama head covers they started pulling against him. Once they realized Peterson and Toms weren't going to match Thompson's +2 total they were hoping Simpson held on because they "didn't want to see a Gump win it all".
