I was defending Mathieu to a friend of mine who kept saying that Mathieu is a lot of hype. I started thinking about what my friend said after the Auburn - LSU game b/c Mathieu's backup, Ron Brooks, had a pass defended and an interception returned for a touchdown...and pretty much did what Mathieu does.

So, after the Alabama game I'm convinced Mathieu is a system player. If Mathieu can't come off the edge, he can't do anything else b/c he sure as hell can't cover.

Do you realize how difficult it is for ANY cb to cover a crossing route? It's what zone coverage is for.

Ron Brooks can maybe replace his production for one game, but the great thing about TM7 is how consistently he produces turnovers. 2 years of ron brooks starting would not replicate TM7's production, sorry.

I don't remember Mathieu ever blanketing anybody. Now, Claiborne and Taylor are the real deal.

He can cover, he's just not outstanding at it like some think when they think of him. He's an average corner back, but a great football player and playmaker.

Taylor isn't even the best safety on their team

Reminds me a lot of Charles Woodson now(not in prime because he was much better in coverage a few years back). Both players are going to get beat and have the occasional penalty. But they are play makers and just have a feel of where the ball is going. Good at forcing turnovers and also rushing the passer

His value is as a playmaker. He has very good coverage skills in the vertical game, but can lapse a bit in coverage sometimes. I don't know you the term "system player" got included in the OP however.

There are better, there are worse. He is good enough, and on occasion does something spectacular.

System player like an Arkansas QB. Plug in and go. Now, that doesn't mean your terrible but not you're a long ways from being a great player.

June Jones produces system QB's. Les Miles produces system DB's.

The reality is that Brooks and Mathieu are very skilled defensive players.

Dude's a Sophomore. He's not done yet. Between now and our bowl game (whatever that may be) he will make another freakishly amazing play. It's what he does.

If by "plug in an go" you mean grooming and developing a player for 4 years, I agree.

I don't think of Mathieu as a DB.

Since DB's are primarily reactionary, how do you produce a system one?

This. It's like saying Trent Richardson is a system RB. Makes no sense.

Well, I was really trying to get the skinny. IF this dude has knowledge on how to mass produce these things, I am going into business.
